Smart Vitality Emmy Sammon NHFDip, MFNTP, Nutritional Therapist. Empowering health, inspiring wellness

As a Naturopathic Nutritional Therapist, I integrate the principles of naturopathy with nutritional therapy, which emphasises the healing power of nature and the body's innate ability to heal itself. I firmly believe that food is medicine, and by providing the body with the right environment, at a cellular level, we can support its natural healing processes and promote optimal health and vitality. My approach to naturopathic nutrition involves identifying and addressing the root causes of health issues rather than just treating symptoms. I take a holistic view of health, considering the interconnectedness of body, mind, and spirit. I work closely with my clients to develop personalised nutrition and lifestyle plans that take into account their unique needs, preferences, and goals. Through dietary changes, lifestyle modifications, naturopathic techniques and nutritional supplements, I aim to create an optimal environment for health and wellbeing. I empower my clients with the knowledge and tools they need to make sustainable changes and achieve long-term health and vitality. Together, we can work towards unlocking your body's natural healing potential and helping you live your best life. 7 Tips for a Happy Microbiome

Your gut microbiome plays a crucial role in your overall health. Here are some tips to keep it thriving!

1. Eat a Diverse Wholefood Diet
Include a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds in your meals. The more diverse your diet, the more types of good bacteria you'll foster in your gut.

2. Probiotic Fermented Foods
Incorporate fermented foods like kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, miso and kombucha into your diet. These foods are rich in probiotics that help maintain a healthy balance of gut bacteria.

3. Prebiotic Foods
Foods like onions, garlic, savoy cabbage, flaxseeds, apples, oats, Jerusalem artichoke and unripe bananas act as prebiotics, feeding the beneficial bacteria in your gut.

4. Stay Hydrated
Drinking plenty of filtered water supports the mucosal lining of the intestines and the balance of good bacteria. Make sure to stay hydrated throughout the day!

5. Limit Processed Foods and Sugar
Processed foods and sugar can promote the growth of harmful bacteria. Opt for whole, unprocessed foods to keep your gut in good shape.

6. Exercise Regularly
Regular physical activity promotes the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise most days of the week.

7. Manage Stress
High stress levels can negatively impact your gut health. Practice stress-reducing activities like yoga, meditation, or deep-breathing exercises to keep your gut happy.

Remember, a happy gut = a happy you!

Here's how they're connected:

- Oestrogen Metabolism: Gut bacteria help metabolise oestrogen. An imbalance can lead to oestrogen-related health issues.

- Thyroid Function: Healthy gut bacteria supports the conversion of thyroid hormones, crucial for energy and metabolism.

- Immune System: The gut houses a significant part of your immune system. Gut issues can lead to inflammation, impacting stress hormones like cortisol.

- Gut-Brain Axis: The communication between your gut and brain affects mood and stress levels, influencing your overall hormonal health.

- Nutrient Absorption: A healthy gut ensures you absorb essential nutrients needed for hormone production.

- Short-Chain Fatty Acids (SCFAs): Produced by gut bacteria, these support insulin sensitivity and metabolic health.

Top Tips for a Healthy Gut:

- Eat Fibre-Rich Foods: Load up on fruits, veggies, whole grains, and legumes.

- Incorporate Probiotics: Include yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and other fermented foods.

- Add Prebiotics: Feed your good bacteria with foods like garlic, onions, bananas, and asparagus.

- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to support digestion.

- Manage Stress: Practice mindfulness, meditation, or yoga.

- Exercise Regularly: Physical activity promotes healthy gut function.

- Get Enough Sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night.

- Limit Processed Foods: Avoid sugary, fatty, and processed foods.

- Avoid Unnecessary Antibiotics: Use them only when prescribed to prevent disrupting your gut microbiome.

- Chew Your Food Well: Proper digestion starts in the mouth.
