Today, we remember those who volunteered, sacrificed, served, fought, and died, for our freedom. We thank you, and we salute you as we salute those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. We will never forget. We will remember

They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them not the years condemn,
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We shall remember them

🎃 Halloween can be great fun, especially for kids. And lots of us enjoy seeing local children out trick or treating in their costumes. However, for some people, particularly the elderly, it can be a worry - especially if they're home alone and concerned about callers after dark.

While none of us wants to spoil the fun, we also shouldn't have to feel scared or anxious in our own homes. Here are some simple things we can all do to make sure Halloween remains good fun for everyone.

If you're concerned about staying safe:

🔸 Always put the door chain on and look out of the window or spy hole to see who's there before opening the door.
🔸 Take particular care if there's more than one person on your doorstep.
🔸 Only open the door if you feel safe to do so. If you're in any doubt or don't feel safe, don't - it's fine not to answer the door if you don't want to.
🔸 If you're really worried, invite a friend or relative around and spend the evening together.

If you're out trick or treating:

🔸 Remember that some older people and other members of your community might not want to be disturbed. A good rule of thumb is to look for a pumpkin outside the house - that's a sign the house is happy to receive trick or treaters.
🔸 Be mindful of noise late at night.
🔸 Don't persistently ring someone's doorbell, knock on their door or return to their house later. If they don't answer, it's best to move on.

Happy Halloween Everyone! 🎃🦇👻🎃🦇👻

14/07/2025

It is really important that everyone keeps hydrated, but even more so during these hot summer months ☀️ Staying hydrated is crucial for the elderly, as they are more susceptible to dehydration and heat-related illnesses.

Why keep hydrated?
The body is made up of roughly 60% water which is needed to enable the brain and body to function effectively. Your body uses water in all its cells, organs, and tissues to help regulate its temperature and maintain other bodily functions. because your body loses water through breathing, sweating and digestion, it's important to rehydrate by drinking fluids and eating foods that contain water. Being properly hydrated is also needed for some medications to work effectively.

What can happen if I'm dehydrated?
Being dehydrated can have serious health implications, especially in the elderly. It can increase UTI's, impair our thinking, change our mood, cause dizziness and can increase the instances of falls. Sometimes dehydration can lead to hospitalisation and decrease the effective function of organs in the body such as the kidneys.
Signs of dehydration:
* Confusion and delirium
* Dry lips
* Headache
* Dizziness
* Dark coloured, strong smelling urine
* Weakness

How can we help the elderly to increase their fluid intake?
* Always have a drink available at mealtimes, and within reach through out the day
* Add water rich foods to meals and snacks, such as courgettes, cucumber, melon and grapes
* Tea, coffee, squashes and fruit juices can also aid hydration
* Try smoothies, sports drinks, milkshakes and flavoured water, or even adding fruit to flavour plain water
* Provide a reusable bottle so is it easy to track how much water they are drinking

💧☀️💧☀️💧☀️💧☀️

At Caring Hands all of our staff are aware of the symptoms and dangers of dehydration, and encourage our clients to drink plenty of fluids. It is important that they practise what they preach too and carry drinks with them on their rounds so they keep hydrated and well.
