We know that the loss of a baby leaves an imprint that time does not erase, and anniversaries such as Baby Loss Awareness Week can feel especially tender.

With this in mind, we would like to warmly invite you to join us at The Downs Crematorium on Wednesday 15th October at 6:30pm for A Wave of Light — a global commemoration held each year to honour babies who died too soon.

The ceremony will be led by Celebrant, Stewart O’Sullivan, who has walked alongside many families during baby funerals throughout his career. Together, we will create a space of remembrance, reflection and gentle connection.

✨ During the ceremony, you will be invited to write a “letter to heaven”, which can then be placed in our bespoke mailbox in the gardens of The Downs.

✨ As dusk approaches, just before 7pm, we will gather on the chapel steps to light tea candles in memory of each precious baby. These will guide the way to the mailbox, where your letter may be posted.

✨ We encourage you, if you wish, to share a photograph of your candle using the hashtag , helping you to connect with others around the world who carry a similar loss in their hearts.

We hope this evening will feel both healing and uplifting — a moment to pause, to honour, and to know that you are not alone.

As the funeral directors who supported you during one of the hardest chapters of your life, it would mean so much to welcome you back and to share in this peaceful act of remembrance together.

We are delighted to announce that our Memorial tree is now up! Letters containing tree tags were posted on Friday the 29th of November and will be arriving with you imminently. If you do not receive a tag or would like one, then please call us at the office or send us an email and we will get one out to you.
Last year we had over two hundred of your messages to your loved ones returned. We can either hang messages on the tree on your behalf or you may, if you wish, come into the office and place it on the tree yourself.

It is with great sadness that we join with the nation in mourning the death of Her Majesty The Queen.

The funeral will take place on Monday 19th September 2022. In light of this being declared a bank holiday, we want to let you know that our office will not be open on this day. We will of course be available by telephone if you have an immediate need.

Hi Teresa.

Firstly, I wanted to say a huge thank you for everything you all did for us. Yesterday was beautiful. Really beautiful. And a fitting send off for my lovely mum, even given the restrictions. I’ll always be so eternally grateful to all of you.

I also wanted to share something I’ve posted on Facebook today. I couldn’t tag you as I don’t know if you’re on there. But these are my words - I haven’t copied them from somebody else’s much-forwarded post, these are all from my heart.

“ Please remember our funerals directors...

Our dear friend Teresa Baker was mum’s FD yesterday and one of our dearest friends Paul Capper was mum’s celebrant - he’s been an FD for 35 years, he knew my mum and loved her. Also in attendance was our dear friend Chris Sarson, another FD of many years experience. Funeral Directors are very humble. They’re very kind and caring. They deal with us during the most difficult times in our lives. They don’t ask for praise or kudos, but they quietly get on with such a truly difficult job, almost entirely in the shadows. But they really are an unsung emergency service.

This last year has been hard on them. Really hard. Their working life is spent surrounded by our grief and our sorrow. They don’t work 9 to 5. They get calls at all hours of the day. At the moment they are experiencing never-before-seen numbers of funerals to arrange and attend. They are working all hours, every day, eating (occasionally) and sleeping when they can catch a few hours here and there. But even with all their experience they’re finding it tough.

You dont hear about them on the news or read much about funeral directors. NHS staff and other frontline care workers rightly get the recognition they deserve. But care doesn’t stop when somebody dies. Funeral Directors are care workers too.

Please, give some time to think about, and try and appreciate what our funeral directors are currently going through.

If you know a funeral director....
* Send them a hug - they could really do with one.
* Send them your love - it will help to keep them going.
* Send them something funny - it will help to lift their spirits.
* Ask if they’re looking after themselves - knowing you care enough to ask will warm their hearts and offer to do some shopping for them or take them a meal.

Teresa did a smashing job of mum’s funeral, it was really beautiful. Paul was brilliant as mum’s celebrant, injecting love, respect and humour at all the right moments. Chris gave much appreciated support. I don’t know why we know three funeral directors, but we value them as dear friends, for what they did for us and mum, and for the amazing job they do for everyone.”

Please forward this to your whole team and let them know that they are all very much appreciated.

Thanks so much, lovely lady.

Tony & Chris x
