Martlets Hospice

Martlets Hospice Martlets is a local charity that provides terminally ill people in Brighton and Hove, and surrounding areas, with the very best care and support.

Our expert team helps patients live life to the full during the precious time they have left. Martlets opened in 1997. The staff and services were formed from the merger of three separate charities: Coppercliff Hospice, Tarner and MacMillan Day Hospice. Across the hospice services, more than 25,000 local people have been supported and cared for since 1997. Most people receive care from us in their own homes. Outpatients also visit our hospice for pain relief, physiotherapy, counselling, welfare advice and social activities. Others choose to spend their final days here, or to join us as inpatients for respite care or symptom management. Thank you for your generous support – it enables us to provide exceptional care that changes lives.

Today is Men’s Mental Health Awareness Day which focuses on men’s wellbeing and encourages open conversations to help break down stigmas.

Roy was devastated after the loss of his wife Pat, who was cared for by Martlets. At first, he was reticent about ‘talk therapy’, but now he’s keen to encourage other bereaved men to get this support:

“During that first session my counsellor was amazing. I suddenly broke down and cried and I’ve done that in every session, but it’s been a relief to get it out. Counselling has brought things out in me which no one else could.”

In this blog, Roy explains why he changed his mind about ‘talk therapy’ and how Martlets’ bereavement counselling service helped him rebuild his life.

During Children’s Grief Awareness Week (17-23 November) we’re sharing advice that supports the event’s theme: Sharing Stories, Strengthening Hope.

Children may find it difficult to comprehend the limitations of serious illness and its implications, and they experience grief differently to adults:

‘It’s natural that parents want to protect their children, but really it’s about how best to support them. Taking time to come to terms with your diagnosis (or your partner’s) is important, before telling your children. When the time is right, we can help people find simple words and clear language.’

In this blog, we bring together comments from our counsellors and patient and family support team to explain how families can help children during challenging times:

Today marks the beginning of Children’s Grief Awareness Week and this year's theme is Sharing Stories, Strengthening Hope. Simone, a senior staff nurse at Martlets, explains how we help support children and bereaved families, giving them hope to face the future.

She says: “If I were an inpatient, I would want to be able to see my children interacting in a natural way when they visit; Martlets really enables that. Our patient rooms are spacious and comfortable with ensuite bathrooms. They also have larger ‘cuddle beds’ and sofabeds to lounge on.”

Marc is supporting our joint appeal with St Barnabas House this winter:
“We’re here for you. Will you be here for us?” 💕

“Through my counsellor at Martlets, I started to explore doing things that I thought I’d never be well enough to do again. I realised that although I couldn’t perform, maybe I could direct people on stage or work in the wings, which would still give me that connection to the theatre – the thing I love most.

"At Brighton’s Theatre Royal, I felt the warmth of the lights above me, looked out towards the Royal Circle and had this feeling of elation. I couldn’t have done that without the help of my counsellor at Martlets.”

Read more from Marc and find out why he is determined to keep Martlets caring as he approaches the end of his life.

“We’re here for you.”

At Martlets, our specialist teams work day and night to ensure patients and their loved ones receive the very best care and support. Here, two members of staff — Emma, a healthcare assistant, and Jason, housekeeping team leader — explain why they work for Martlets and what they enjoy about their roles.

Emma: “I like to know I’m making people’s lives better.”

Jason: “We’re here for patients whether that’s medical care, keeping the hospice clean and safe, or just making them smile.”

This winter, we are having to make some difficult decisions. Hospices nationwide are facing a funding crisis, and we are not immune.

So, we have made a choice: to ask for your support now, so we can keep on caring for patients and families. Patients like Marc.

We’re here for you, will you be here for us? Please donate: www.martlets.org.uk/will-you-be-here-for-us-this-winter
