In just over a month, a team of runners from Martlets will be taking on the Brighton 10K to raise vital funds for the hospice - what stars! 🌟

Julie, pictured second from the right, said:

"For the past four years, I’ve had the privilege of working as a community nurse specialist with the Martlets community team. My role involves providing palliative care, symptom management, and end-of-life support for patients in the comfort and dignity of their own homes. Every day, I also witness the profound impact this care has on families as they navigate some of the most difficult moments in their lives.

"Martlets is more than a hospice—it’s a lifeline. The care we provide is only possible because of the generosity of people who believe in compassion, dignity, and comfort for those who need it most. Every donation, no matter the amount, contributes to helping someone feel safe, supported, and cared-for during an incredibly vulnerable time. This kindness truly makes a difference."

A big thank you to Paul the Painter for donating seven of his prints to our inpatient wards at Martlets!

Pauly is a familiar figure in Brighton and Hove, often seen out and about with his easel and brushes. His wonderful prints of local landmarks have ‘Brightoned’ up our wards and are being enjoyed by patients, staff and visitors.

We’re looking forward to Pauly visiting us again in the summer to capture the beauty of our hospice gardens.

An important update on our services...

Following years of increased demand, rising costs and funding that hasn’t kept pace with inflation, like many hospices across the UK we’re operating at an unsustainable financial deficit.

We need to make some difficult decisions now to ensure our long-term financial sustainability, and today, after a detailed review of our clinical offering, we’ve proposed some changes to our services to colleagues. This means that the services we offer to our patients and families at Chestnut Tree House, Martlets Hospice and St Barnabas House may soon look different.

The proposals are subject to change throughout the consultation, so we’re not able to share more detail yet, but our patients and families remain our priority at this time. We’ll write directly to patients and families where any confirmed changes relate to their care.

We’d like to thank our incredible communities and supporters for their understanding at this difficult time.

Today, Valentine’s Day, we’re sharing the story of Nathan and Bekki’s wedding at Martlets, and celebrating the love they shared as a family.

The couple got married in our Sanctuary a week before Bekki died in November 2025, at the age of 34.

“After my proposal, we had two days to prepare," said Nathan. "Martlets were brilliant at helping me get the necessary consent from a doctor and the registry office and so on. We were able to have the ceremony in Martlets’ Sanctuary, which is a lovely calming space. We had our reception in the Martlets cafe which was also decorated for us.”

We’re so proud to share that our film ‘We’re here for you. Will you be here for us?’ has been named a finalist in the ! 🎉🎬

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who voted for us. This was the first time we created a joint film with our sister hospice St Barnabas House, and it follows the story of Marc — a hospice patient whose voice reflects not only the compassion and comfort palliative care brings, but also the fear felt by people across the country who worry this support may not be there when they need it most.

Thanks to your incredible support, we’ve made it to the final. We’re keeping everything crossed! 🤞

This week, in the run up to Valentine’s Day, we’re sharing stories of love.

Tom’s wife Penny spent her last weeks on Martlets’ inpatient ward and the couple got married in our Sanctuary.

“People have said to me that it must’ve been horrific having to get married in a hospice under the shadow of Penny’s illness. But it was actually the most amazing day and the room was full of so much love. After months of bleakness, having a day together to do something so beautiful was wonderful. Penny had such a look of joy on her face, which was incredible given the circumstances.”
