Martlets Hospice

Martlets Hospice Martlets is a local charity that provides terminally ill people in Brighton and Hove, and surrounding areas, with the very best care and support.

Our expert team helps patients live life to the full during the precious time they have left. Martlets opened in 1997. The staff and services were formed from the merger of three separate charities: Coppercliff Hospice, Tarner and MacMillan Day Hospice. Across the hospice services, more than 25,000 local people have been supported and cared for since 1997. Most people receive care from us in their own homes. Outpatients also visit our hospice for pain relief, physiotherapy, counselling, welfare advice and social activities. Others choose to spend their final days here, or to join us as inpatients for respite care or symptom management. Thank you for your generous support – it enables us to provide exceptional care that changes lives.

“Dixie could come into Martlets and actually get on the bed with Mum, so they could have a cuddle! That was such a big deal and brought Mum so much peace.”

— Victor 💙🐾

Victor’s mum Annie was cared for on Martlets’ inpatient unit during the last week of her life. Victor talks about the importance of hospice care, and how enabling Annie to have her beloved dog by her side made all the difference during her last days.

Following a period of consultation with colleagues, we have had to make some very difficult decisions about how our services look from the end of this month at St Barnabas House, Martlets Hospice, Chestnut Tree House.

We are making changes now so we can continue to care for those who need us most, those with the most complex needs. To do this, we’re prioritising those needing specialist palliative and end-of-life care. This is where we make the greatest difference to patients and their loved ones.

Like many hospices across the UK, we are facing rising demand and increasing costs, and we are currently operating with a £3.7 million deficit.

This hasn’t been an easy decision, but we’d like to thank our incredible colleagues for all their support as we have gone through this difficult time.

Huge thanks to our communities and supporters for their understanding, too. We are committed to being here for you for many years to come, and we couldn’t do it without you standing by our side.

Christian is taking on the Brighton Marathon on Sunday 12 April in memory of his mum, Maria — and to give back to Martlets after the compassionate care she received during her final weeks 💙🏃‍♂️

He shares how running has helped him navigate his grief and why hospice care meant so much to his family:

“I lost my mum to cancer in July 2025, and running has become a kind of therapy for me — a way to process my grief. When Mum moved to Martlets it was a sanctuary after weeks of hospital noise and distress, where small acts of kindness from staff made all the difference. The lack of hospice funding in the UK is heartbreaking, so please help fundraise in any way you can.”

Shop here! Shop now!

We had a very special guest at our Church Street shop yesterday as we threw open the doors after a little revamp ✨

We were thrilled to welcome Fatboy Slim aka Norman Cook 🤩 who kindly joined us to cut the ribbon and celebrate the re-opening of this much-loved Martlets' shop.

Our shops play a vital role in funding hospice care for local communities across Brighton and Hove, so a huge thank you to everyone who donates, buys and volunteers – we couldn’t do it without you!

Thank you also to everyone who showed support and helped us bring new life into this popular shop. We can’t wait to see more customers this weekend! 👜👗🕶️

💛 Hospice care needs your support more than ever.

A new national report has shown something we at Martlets see every day — more people than ever need end‑of‑life care, but the funding to provide it simply isn’t keeping up.

CEO Stuart Palma said:

“Demand for care is rising fast, but funding isn’t. Hospices are being asked to bridge an ever‑widening gap — and we cannot do this alone.”

Hospices care for hundreds of thousands of people each year, helping families through some of the most difficult moments of their lives. When services are cut, more people end up in hospital, often against their wishes.

Everyone deserves dignity and choice at the end of life.

We urgently need:
🔹 A clear definition of core services
🔹 A fair, sustainable funding model
🔹 Recognition of the essential value hospice care provides

📄 You can read our statement and find a link to the report here: www.southernhospicegroup.org.uk/hospice-funding-must-be-addressed-urgently-warns-southern-hospice-group/

💛 Thank you to everyone who supports us and hospice care for our communities.

🎬 We’ve made the finals! 🎉

The People’s Choice category of the is now open — and your vote could help shine a national spotlight on the power and importance of hospice care.

Our film, ‘We’re here for you. Will you be here for us?’, has already helped raise vital funds for our hospice services. Now, as a finalist, it has the chance to reach even more people who need to hear Marc’s story.

Marc’s voice shares the comfort and compassion palliative care can bring — but also the very real fear felt by people across the country who worry this support won’t be there when they need it most.

Today is Disabled Access Day which highlights the importance of accessibility for all.

“Being a group of hospices, we have an opportunity to share facilities and this was a great example of where one of our young people’s needs could be supported that way. Tyler had a great day at Martlets, and the team made us so welcome. We all got a bit soaked – there were bubbles flying! But it was worth it to see Tyler comfortable and having fun.”

— Karen Brailey, lead nurse, Chestnut Tree House.

In this blog, we share how our facilities at Martlets are benefitting our patients, visitors and staff — and our young visitor from Chestnut Tree House!

Warm wishes to those of you celebrating Mother’s Day today. We hope you are able to spend precious time together with those you love.

Mother’s Day can be an emotional day in the calendar if you’re bereaved and feeling the loss of your mum. There’s no “right” way to mark the day, and no obligation to be positive or productive.

Remembering your mum can be gentle, personal, and entirely on your own terms. If it helps to do something, here are ten meaningful ways to remember your mum this Mother’s Day:

Tomorrow is Mother’s Day, so we’re re-sharing Alex’s heartwarming story about her mum Paula.

“I'd never hugged my mum as an adult. We knew we loved each other but we never said it as she was from a generation that didn’t show emotion easily. In that moment, I gave her a hug and I said, ‘You know I love you’. And she said, ‘I love you too’.”

When Paula received care from Martlets, it marked the beginning of a deeper connection between mother and daughter. Alex shares how our nurses helped her build a closer relationship with her mum:

Ray is currently being cared for on our inpatient unit. To celebrate his 79th birthday, his wife Jackie and daughter Sarah were able to use our Martlets cafe on a Sunday afternoon for a family party.

Jackie says:

"It made such a difference being able to use the cafe space for friends and family to gather, rather than trying to squeeze everyone in around Ray's bed. It made it feel like a proper family celebration. We brought food in and ordered some sandwiches and I made a pavlova - there was even enough left for the amazing staff to have some! Martlets have gone above and beyond to care for Ray and giving us the space to celebrate Ray's birthday meant so much to us."
