Real Results & Owners Stories with Mycosorb A + and ReMove

If you have been following along this week, you will know that you can’t avoid mycotoxins but you can support and protect your horse’s digestive health and overall wellbeing.

Mycosorb A + and ReMove were created to address the real world challenges shown in current research.

ReMove combines:

Mycosorb A+ and algae meal
✅ Helps bind a wide range of mycotoxins in the digestive tract.

Actigen & Ecocell (MOS prebiotics)
✅ Support beneficial hindgut bacteria and immune function.

PowerStance (lauric acid)
✅ Supports gut health, appetite, and skin/coat condition.

No binder can eliminate mycotoxins, but using Mycosorb A+ or ReMove can support a practical, multi layered way to reduce their impact and support long term wellbeing, particularly during high risk periods, such as spring and summer.

Nothing speaks louder than the real results from horses and owners ⤵

“A few months back my thoroughbred developed scabby itchy patches along his back and down his legs and noticeable drop in his top line. I tried many different topical treatments and washes but no change his back was hot and sore and no way I could put a saddle on him. I decided I had nothing to lose by trying a toxin binder and within a week his itch was gone. I have also noticed a huge change in his overall condition and energy levels in the weeks since then. His coat is glistening and his muscle tone is the best it’s ever been but even more importantly my very hot headed and sensitive horse is calm and so much happier in his work.”

🌱 Welcome to Mycotoxin Awareness Week 🌱

What is mycotoxin binding?

There are a variety of toxin binders out there and they are not all created equal, they work by attaching to mycotoxins in the gut before they can be absorbed into the bloodstream. Once bound, the toxins are carried safely through the digestive tract and excreted.

Inorganic binders such as bentonite clays and aluminosilicates are great for aflatoxins, but less effective for fusarium toxins which are the ones most relevant to horses.

Organic binders, particularly those derived from yeast and algae bind a broader range of toxins and mannan oligosaccharides (MOS) also support hindgut health.

Broad spectrum support is important as many horses rarely encounter just one mycotoxin

Next, we will be looking at how Mycosorb A+ and ReMove can support your horse

What can I do to prevent the impacts of Mycotoxins?

It is important to understand that you cannot completely eliminate mycotoxins, but you can reduce their impact.

- Avoid over grazed or drought-stressed fields
- Store hay for at least 3 months before feeding
- Ensure haylage is fully sealed and discard punctured or musty smelling forage
- Buy feed from FEMAS accredited manufacturers
- Store feeds in a clean, cool and dry place in sealed bins
- Choose and clean, dry and quality bedding
- Test forage when any concerns arise

Prevention and support are all about reducing the overall toxin burden, not eliminating it.

Next, we will be looking at toxin binders and why some work better for horses than others

🌱 Welcome to Mycotoxin Awareness Week 🌱

What are the signs your horse may be affected?

Mycotoxin symptoms can be subtle, difficult to pinpoint, are often varied and can sometimes be written off as ‘just your horse’

Symptoms can include but are not limited to:
• Unexplained poor performance
• Reduced appetite
• Behavioural changes
• Compromised immunity
• Neurological signs
• Liver enzyme elevations
• Diarrhoea or inconsistent manure
• Photosensitivity
• Swollen mammary glands or altered seasons in mares

Getting an official diagnosis can be costly and typically involves ruling out many other potential causes of the symptoms as well as testing forage through a reputable laboratory. Any results should be reviewed alongside a suitable nutrition or veterinary professional.

In our next topic we will be looking at what you can do to reduce the impact of mycotoxins

🌱 Welcome to Mycotoxin Awareness Week 🌱

What are the key Mycotoxins that can affect your horse?

Not all mycotoxins behave in the same way, and some are higher risk for horses than others

The three major fungal groups to understand are:

Fusarium – These are typically found out in the field, growing on grasses and cereal crops before they are ever harvested. Fusarium produces several well known toxins, including the trichothecenes (such as deoxynivalenol, or DON), which interfere with normal cell function and can irritate the gut lining, reduce appetite, and weaken the immune system. Another important group of Fusarium toxins is the fumonisins, to which horses are particularly sensitive. These toxins are associated with serious neurological and liver damage.

Aspergillus & Penicillium – These typically develop after harvest, especially in warm, damp, poorly stored forage.

Endophyte toxins – These are found inside the plant. Ryegrass and tall fescue can contain ergovaline and lolitrem B and there is no visible mould. These are linked to vasoconstriction, poor thermoregulation, reproductive issues, and neurological signs.

Understanding the source can help reduce the exposure.

Next, we will be looking at the potential symptoms of mycotoxin exposure

🌱 Welcome to Mycotoxin Awareness Week 🌱

Where do Mycotoxins come from?

Mycotoxins can be found in forage both before it’s harvested and during storage.

In the field, fungi such as Fusarium can affect grasses and cereal crops during growth. Warm, humid and fluctuating weather conditions, particularly those we are experiencing in the UK spring and summer, encourage their development.

During storage fungi such as aspergillus and penicillium can thrive when hay or haylage is baled too wet, when plastic wrap is punctured, or when feed is stored warm, damp or in poorly ventilated conditions. These can continue to produce toxins long after the forage has been harvested.

Because horses consume large quantities of forage daily and have a sensitive digestive system, they can be particularly vulnerable to the effects of these toxins.

🌱 Welcome to Mycotoxin Awareness Week 🌱

What are mycotoxins and why do they matter?

Mycotoxins are everywhere, even in good pasture and forages. They are invisible compounds produced by fungi and moulds such as fusarium, aspergillus and penicillium. They are found in pasture, hay, haylage, cereals and even bedding and can be detrimental to the horse, causing an array of symptoms.

They are heat stable, meaning that they can survive processes such as pelleting and even digestion. Over 500 mycotoxins have been identified and horses are often exposed to several at once.

Over the next few days, we’ll explore what the science tells us and help you to ensure your horse’s health and wellbeing is protected.
