Haughton Thornley Medical Centres

Haughton Thornley Medical Centres Patient-focused GP Practice providing exceptional healthcare and diverse services. Why wait when you can do it now yourself and for your family!

Haughton Thornley Medical Centres is a family-friendly innovative modern surgery with 8 GPs and 4 nurses delivering a wide variety of enhanced services including minor operations, coil fits, insulin initiation, a warfarin clinic and monitoring of disease modifying arthritis drugs alongside our basic care. We have been very innovative and won awards for the online services we provide our patients. Over 2400 patients currently have access to their GP electronic health records. Patients can book appointments online (currently for nurses and healthcare assistants), order repeat prescriptions online and send non-urgent secure electronic messages (and receive replies back from clinicians or staff depending on the nature of the query) via the internet, smartphone or tablet. Patients can also view their complete electronic health record and see what their doctor or nurse has written about them as well as view tests results, correspondence from other providers such as the hospital or community based clinics, see their immunisation history or even previous medications that they may have been prescribed. Patients can also see a list of all their significant active and past health problems including dates for when they were diagnosed too. This can be very helpful when applying for jobs, insurance or just to be nosey! We encourage patients to get a better understanding of their own healthcare by signposting patients to trusted information via our practice website www.htmc.co.uk. You can learn more about self care here http://tinyurl.com/mehgrln and common problems you can solve! You can learn more about why we decided to set up a Facebook and twitter page as well by visiting http://tinyurl.com/ptfrvmn

We are just starting on this journey and hope to use Facebook to inform patients and the public about what is happening at Haughton Thornley Medical Centres as well as finding out what else is happening beyond us. We hope patients find this a useful way to keep in touch and inform others about developments or important news too. You can email us directly htmcpatient@nhs.net. Please note: we do not recommend patients posting or emailing any personal identifiable confidential information via Facebook or email as this is not a secure method of communication. Your confidentiality and privacy is our primary concern. It is much safer to send messages securely via Patient Access and e-messaging. 🎃🔪 Thinking of carving up a spooky pumpkin this Halloween? Before you do, here’s how to stay safe - and how to keep your sugar intake in check 👻🍬

How to carve a pumpkin safely:
🛠️ Use a clean, dry, well-lit area with a sturdy surface.
🧼 Wash and thoroughly dry your hands and tools to avoid slips.
🛡️ Use a proper pumpkin carving kit (small serrated saws) instead of large kitchen knives.
🔄 Always cut away from your body and use small, controlled motions.
👨‍👩‍👧 Leave the carving to adults; kids can draw the design or scoop out pulp.
⚠️ If you get cut and heavy bleeding continues for more than 15 minutes, seek medical care.

Too many sweets can impact your health in more ways than one.

Balance is everything - carve safely, enjoy treats mindfully, and take care.

🩺 Type 2 diabetes
💢 High blood pressure (hypertension)
❤️‍🩹 And face a higher risk of heart disease, kidney issues & stroke

But knowledge = power 💡💪
Let’s take action together:
🍽️ Eat for your heart & blood sugar (think more veggies, less salt!)
🏃🏽‍♂️ Move that body daily
🧪 Get regular checks - blood pressure & diabetes screenings can be life-saving
🫱🏾‍🫲🏽 Talk to your family - sharing this info could change lives

🎗️ ADHD Awareness Month - October is here! Whether you're newly considering ADHD or already navigating life with it - you’re not alone. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that can manifest as inattention, impulsivity, hyperactivity, or all three - presenting differently across individuals and across life stages

Seeking clarity? Begin with ADHD UK’s About ADHD page, offering videos from specialists and a self-screener for adults

ADHD UK also hosts peer support groups, expert-led sessions, and an online marketplace of coaches and tools to help with day-to-day challenges

Why it matters:

• Diagnoses are rising - not because ADHD is increasing, but because awareness is growing and stigma is lifting
• But many still wait long months - even years - for NHS assessments - access remains unequal
• Misinformation online can confuse rather than clarify. Trusted sources like ADHD UK are key

🎀 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month - a time to learn, support, and advocate for everyone affected 💖

Breast cancer doesn’t just affect women. Men can get it too. It can also impact transgender people, who may face extra barriers to awareness, diagnosis, and care.

Here’s what to keep in mind:
🩺 Know the signs in everyone - lumps, changes in shape, ni**le changes, skin dimpling
🔍 Men, don’t ignore changes in your chest or ni**le - although less common, breast cancer can still occur in men
🏳️‍⚧️ Trans and nonbinary people: your risks and body may change with hormone therapy or surgeries - always feel empowered to ask for care and checkups

🦴🌍 World Osteoporosis Day - 20 October is your moment to take action for stronger, healthier bones! This silent disease often shows no symptoms until we suffer a fracture. But with awareness, prevention, and early diagnosis, we can change that.

What is osteoporosis? It’s a bone condition where bone density drops and microarchitecture weakens - making bones fragile and more prone to breaks, especially in the hip, wrist, and spine.

Risk factors include aging, menopause (due to dropping estrogen), smoking, alcohol, poor nutrition, certain medications, and underlying health conditions.

Preventive steps:
• Eat a bone‑friendly diet rich in calcium, vitamin D, protein 🍎
• Do weight‑bearing and resistance exercises 🏋️‍♀️
• Avoid smoking and excess alcohol 🚭🍷
• Get your bone density checked if you're at risk

Learn more and reach support:

Together, let’s break the silence around osteoporosis and stand strong for bone health!
