Have you heard of phantom pregnancies? πŸ‘»

It's a condition that causes an animal to act and feel pregnant when they aren't. It's most common in dogs, but can affect cats and other pets too. It can cause symptoms such as:

- Nesting (collecting toys/blankets/clothes)
- Mothering a soft toy or another item
- Behavioural changes (nervousness and/or aggression)
- Lactating (producing milk)
- Low energy
- Reduced appetite

Phantom pregnancies happen after every season when a female dog’s body releases hormones just like it would during a real pregnancy. This can sometimes trick her body into thinking she’s pregnant, even when she’s not.

Fortunately, most phantom pregnancies are mild and resolve within a few weeks, but there are some instances which require treatment from a vet.

The only reliable way to prevent phantom pregnancies is to have your dog spayed. Without this, she may continue to have them after future seasons.
