Lymphoedema causes swelling when your lymphatic system can't drain fluid properly. It most commonly affects the arms or legs and it's more common than most people realise.
Why does this matter, even if you don't have it?
Lymphoedema can develop after surgery, cancer treatment, injury, or infection. Anyone who's had lymph nodes removed, had radiotherapy, or lives with a venous condition is at higher risk. It can also develop gradually without an obvious cause. Knowing the early signs means catching it early, when it's easiest to manage.
Signs to watch for:
✓ Clothing or jewellery feeling tighter than usual
✓ A feeling of heaviness or tightness in a limb
✓ Swelling that doesn't go down overnight
If you notice any of these, speak to your GP. Early action makes a real difference.
If you're already managing lymphoedema:
The best outcomes come from staying consistent with three things: compression, movement and skin care. Our guide covers all of this in more detail.
