Let’s talk about Chronic Kidney Disease

Chronic Kidney Disease, commonly referred to as CKD, is a condition where the kidneys do not work as well as they should. It can affect anyone but is more common in people of black or south Asian origin.

In its early stages, CKD does not usually present symptoms and may only be diagnosed if you have a blood or urine test for another reason. If you do receive a diagnosis of CKD, the important thing is not to panic. Many people with the condition continue to live long lives, and there are plenty of treatment options available, including simple lifestyle changes, medication, dialysis and in more severe advanced stages, a kidney transplant.

CKD only progresses to kidney failure in around 2 in 100 people with the condition, but if you are concerned about symptoms such as tiredness, swollen feet, shortness of breath, nausea and noticing blood in your urine, please get in touch to speak to a doctor.

Ovarian cancer is the biggest gynaecological killer of women in the UK.

Survival rates rise when we catch the disease early. If you notice signs such as bloating, stomach pain, more frequent urination and difficulty eating, it is probably nothing to worry about, but it could mean something sinister. If you have any concerns, please feel free to reach out to speak to a trained clinician about your symptoms. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Important health update: Measles and Vaccination

Has your child had their MMR/MMRV vaccination? 💉

Measles is one of the most highly infectious diseases and spreads rapidly among those who are unvaccinated. This illness is not only unpleasant, but it can also sometimes cause very serious health complications, and even death. And now, as you have probably seen on the news, we are seeing new outbreaks in parts of the country.

So, what can we do about this?

We strongly urge parents and carers to check their child’s vaccination status and ensure they are fully protected against measles by having the MMR or MMRV vaccine. If your child is not up to date, please contact us to get booked in. They will need two doses in total to be fully protected. If you do not want your child to have the porcine gelatine containing vaccine, there is an alternative vaccination option to this too.

The figures speak for themselves:

• In 2023, an estimated 107,500 measles-related deaths occurred worldwide, mostly among unvaccinated children under 5
• 9 in 10 unvaccinated children can catch measles from an infected classmate, with 1 in 5 of these requiring a hospital visit
• 1 in 15 will also experience complications such as meningitis or sepsis
• Unvaccinated children who come into contact with measles may be excluded from school or nursery for up to 21 days, which will affect their education

Vaccination is the single best way to protect yourself from infection and to help prevent disruption to your home life, work, and your child’s education. If you have any queries or concerns, our Practice Nurses will be happy to see you to have that conversation and help to put your mind at ease.

Together, we can eradicate this horrible disease from society, but we need your help. Do your part; get your child vaccinated. 💪

Highly trained pharmacists can offer advice, treatment, and NHS-funded medication (where appropriate) for a variety of conditions.

This can save you time and help free up GP appointments for those who need them most.

If you’re unsure whether Pharmacy First is right for you, ask your local pharmacist or visit the NHS website for more information 💚

How much do you know about HPV? 🫵

Human papillomavirus, more widely known as HPV, is a common group of viruses that affect the skin. HPV does not usually cause any symptoms and most people who have do not even realise.

However, in some cases, HPV can cause abnormal changes in your cells that, if left untreated, could later develop into a range of different cancers.

The best protections against HPV related complications are to have your HPV vaccination and attend routine screenings when invited.
