Let’s talk about Chronic Kidney Disease.

Chronic Kidney Disease, commonly referred to as CKD, is a condition where the kidneys do not work as well as they should. It can affect anyone but is more common in people of black or south Asian origin.

In its early stages, CKD does not usually present symptoms and may only be diagnosed if you have a blood or urine test for another reason. If you do receive a diagnosis of CKD, the important thing is not to panic. Many people with the condition continue to live long lives, and there are plenty of treatment options available, including simple lifestyle changes, medication, dialysis and in more severe advanced stages, a kidney transplant.

CKD only progresses to kidney failure in around 2 in 100 people with the condition, but if you are concerned about symptoms such as tiredness, swollen feet, shortness of breath, nausea and noticing blood in your urine, please get in touch to speak to a doctor.

Do you really need to see the GP or visit A&E?

Several services operate across the NHS, each designed to deal with different situations.

• You should only use 999 in an emergency.
• For issues that are urgent but not life threatening, visit an Urgent Care Centre.
• A GP can help with persistent symptoms.
• The Pharmacy is a great choice for minor ailments such as stomach upset or fever.
• NHS 111 should be used for quick help and advice.
• Finally, common ailments such as coughs or hangovers can be treated at home.

Knowing where to go and when helps the NHS run more smoothly and you to get treated more quickly. Make the right decision.

How much do you know about Haemophilia? 🤔🩸

Haemophilia is a rare, usually inherited bleeding disorder, where blood does not clot properly due to low levels or absence of specific clotting factors.

Symptoms include frequent bruising, severe nosebleeds, joint pain and prolonged bleeding from minor cuts. While it cannot be cured, it is managed by replacing the missing clotting factor through regular intravenous infusions.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome, more commonly referred to as IBS, is a common condition affecting the body’s digestive system. Symptoms include stomach cramps, bloating, diarrhoea and constipation, which tend to come and go over time.

If you are experiencing symptoms of IBS, a few treatment options include taking a warm bath, drinking a non-caffeinated beverage, practicing relaxation techniques such as meditation and deep breath, or talking to your doctor or pharmacist about the most appropriate medications to take during a flare up.
