Cases of flu are high this winter, so if you’re wondering whether it’s just a cold or you’re floored with flu here’s what to do.

Most symptoms can be safely managed at home. Rest, drink plenty of fluids, and use paracetamol or ibuprofen to ease aches and fever. Your pharmacist can advise on cold and flu remedies.

Antibiotics won’t help with colds and flu as they are viruses – time and self-care are best.

To stop the spread:
πŸ’‰ get your flu vaccination if you are eligible
🧼 wash your hands regularly
😷 cover coughs and sneezes

As flu cases rise across Highland and Argyll & Bute, we're taking extra precautions to keep everyone safe.

From this week, our staff in hospitals and community settings will be wearing masks as a protective measure.

We would also ask that visitors to our hospitals also wear masks which will be available on arrival.

This helps us protect our patients and keep our essential services running when you need them most.

Please only visit NHS Highland sites if you are symptom free and limit the number of visitors to relatives and loved ones to help keep everyone safe.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

The symptoms of flu usually develop 1 to 3 days after becoming infected, and most people will feel better within a week.

πŸ”Ή Good Hygiene: Wash your hands often with warm water and soap.
πŸ”Ή Cover Up: Use a tissue or your elbow to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze.
πŸ”Ή Get Rid: Bin used tissues as soon as possible.
πŸ”Ή Stay Home: If you have a high temperature or feel unwell, stay at home to avoid spreading the flu to others.

Remember flu is spread by germs from coughs and sneezes, which can live on hands and surfaces for 24 hours. Follow our hygiene tips above to prevent the virus from spreading further!

It's that time of year when colds and flus are pretty much unavoidable. So here are a few top tips to know about diabetes when you're unwell πŸ€’

πŸ“ž Don't panic. Contact your diabetes team who'll help you if you have any queries or if you are unsure about what to do.
πŸ’Š Keep taking your diabetes medications. Even if you don't feel like eating. Make sure you talk to your diabetes team or speak to a local pharmacist as soon as you’re feeling ill so they can give you the right advice.
πŸ“ˆ Insulin may need to be increased or decreased when you're unwell. Talk to your diabetes team for further advice on how to manage your insulin doses during illness.
πŸ•°οΈ If you check your blood sugars at home you'll probably need to do it more often – at least every four hours, or as advised by your healthcare team, including during the night. If you don't test your blood sugars at home, be aware of the signs of a hyper (hyperglycaemia).
πŸ’§ Stay hydrated. Have plenty of unsweetened drinks and eat little and often.
