Juist Insel Off the north coast of Germany. The perfect spot for some downtime. A surreal Place where no cars or automated vehicles are allowed. Only bicycle, horse and cart. With a population of only 1500 and nothing much to do but wander the beaches , island life on Juist felt very chilled. With so little tension caused by the typical urban rat race and the knowledge that they’re aim is to be carbon neutral by 2030 made Spending a weekend here both mellow and thought provoking.

After many climbs and many descents through some of the most breathtaking scenery in Scotland, Chris and I completed our CALM 2023 ride in glorious sunshine and just in time for Lord of the Rings at the cinema - much to Chris's delight!

As we rode from the Applecross peninsula with its swooping twists and turns, the Bealach Na Bà mountain road was just one of the many highlights for me and was without a doubt the longest continuous hill I've ever cycled up. We definitely didn't set any records on that hill but we did embrace the spirit of the ride. It was about enjoying every moment, raising a bit of cash for a heck of a good cause and remembering a dear friend who we all loved so much.

Thank you so much to everyone who generously dropped a few quid in the jar, it means so much and really makes a big difference in supporting and saving lives.

Since the covid pandemic calls to CALM have increased by 94% with them taking 25,000+ calls every month, with this in mind, every donation, no matter what size, helps to keep the phone lines open for those who are suffering.

If anyone else would still like to show support and donate to CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably) then please click our Just Giving link in the bio and follow the steps.

This year my brother and I are, once again, riding for CALM in memory of our dearly missed and much loved friend Nelson Pratt.

Anyone wishing to show support can do so by clicking the link in the description.

A little about CALM and the cycle sportive:

Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) is leading a movement against su***de. Every week 125 people in the UK take their own lives. And 75% of all UK su***des are male. CALM exists to change this by offering life-saving services, provoking conversation and bringing people together to reject living miserably.

From advice on our site, through to free, confidential chats with our helpline staff, online or on the phone, we’re here for whoever needs us, every day. No matter what.

The much-loved cycling sportive Tour De Test Valley was started in 2012 to honour the life of a very special and loved human being, Nelson Pratt. His friends and family wanted to create a positive legacy to honour his life and raise crucial awareness for su***de prevention. Since 2012, the event has to date raised over half a million pounds for CALM’s life-saving services. The Tour De Test Valley team will be taking a quick pause on the IRL event and will be back in 2024. This year, choose to ride any distance, anywhere in the world over the weekend of 16 - 17 September and help raise much-needed awareness and funds for CALM.

This year, we plan to ride 60 miles (1600 metres of ascent) around the Applecross Peninsula, in support of CALM ( Campaign Against Living Miserably) and in memory of our close and much-loved friend, Nelson Pratt, who tragically died in 2012.

Beautiful winter conditions in April just before the thaw this past week.

This was the longest and hardest day touring I’ve done. I never remember to Strava stuff so haven’t a clue how many miles or feet I covered but Suffice to say I squeezed the very last juice out of my thighs that literally had nothing left to give on the final ascent.

Descending back down in to the resort and onto fresh groomers never felt better and my car, one of only three left in the car park, was a welcome sight as the sun quickly dipped away below the western horizon.

I had had Ben Macdui on my list of tours for some time but never had time or the right weather. This day I detoured and made 5 descents in total, making my own path.

Going on these tours alone is gratifying, I get to really be with the moment, skinning slowly through the open landscape.

Before each descent I’m able to pause and enjoy the view in complete silence. I like that moment of composure. It’s a grounding feeling and something that is rarer, sometimes even nonexistent, when in a group. For as long as I want I can tune in before choosing my line and making turns that appear to sink into the senses with greater potency than if I were distracted before dropping. It feel like a slowing down of time. Perhaps that’s cliched but it is the case, time can move both fast and slow depending on state of the mind.

Forever grateful for the glide… and, to quote Andy Iron’s (pro surfer - RIP) “No matter what, when I'm in the water, even if I don't catch a wave and just swim in the ocean, I always come out a better person.”

The same applies to the mountains for me. No matter what, even if the weather is less than compliant, or the turns are less than optimal, you always come home a better version of yourself.

I say the same stuff all the time in my posts which is probably fairly repetitive, but since this feed as about feeling good I might as well repeat what works…

‘Playing’, in any shape or form that makes you happy is the fountain of youth and what connects us back to the wholeness that we are.

When we feel whole and therefore free from anxiety and any problems, concerns or pressures we might be dealing with we operate from a different brain hemisphere. When we settle into this space of clarity the bodies chemistry changes and the neural activity in both brain and body switches gears from one of limbic dominants to one of cortical dominants. This change ultimately results in feeling more present and alive… feeling good in body and mind.
