World Diabetes Day Post

Today is World Diabetes Day: a reminder of the impact this condition has on lives, families, and communities worldwide.

As a former High Risk Podiatrist in the NHS, I spent years on the frontline: back‑to‑back clinics filled with complex wounds, Charcot foot, and patients facing the devastating reality of amputation. The work was vital, but I often felt the burnout that comes from constantly reacting to crises rather than preventing them.

That experience shaped my mission. I realised I wanted to catch people before they reached hospital doors; to intervene earlier, to educate, and to take a holistic approach to patient management. Because with the right support, many amputations can be prevented.

Podiatrists play a crucial role in diabetes care. We don’t just treat feet; we help protect independence, mobility, and quality of life. Through education, early intervention, and collaborative care, we can change the trajectory for patients living with diabetes.

On this World Diabetes Day, I celebrate the resilience of patients, the dedication of clinicians, and the power of prevention. Let’s keep building systems that empower people to live healthier, fuller lives.

Did you know?

At Caledonia Foot Clinic, your first appointment includes a full foot review, and we repeat this at least once a year. This is in line with the recommendations of the Royal College of Podiatrists, ensuring you receive the highest standard of care.

A key part of this review is the use of a Doppler. This simple, non‑invasive test helps us to detect the early signs of arterial disease, giving us vital information about your circulation and overall foot health.

By carrying out these checks regularly, we can identify potential problems early and support you with the right care plan.

Did you see our email?
As we travel across the Highlands running our alternating community clinics, we rarely have access to a printer. That means after your appointment, any agreed‑upon care plan will be sent to you by email from info@caledoniafootclinic.com.

Sometimes these emails can slip into your spam or junk folder, so please check the day after your visit.

If you can’t find it, don’t worry, just get in touch with us directly and we’ll make sure you receive your plan.

Your care shouldn’t get lost in the inbox!

World Menopause Day!

Today we join people around the world in recognising World Menopause Day. Menopause is a natural life stage that every woman will experience, yet it is still surrounded by silence and misunderstanding.

This year’s theme is Lifestyle Medicine in Menopausal Health. It highlights how everyday choices in nutrition, movement, sleep, and stress management can ease symptoms and support long-term wellbeing.

What you should know:

Menopause often occurs between ages 45 and 55, though the timing often varies.

Symptoms can include hot flushes, sleep disturbance, joint pain, mood changes, and changes in skin and bone health.

Lifestyle choices such as regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and restorative sleep can make a real difference.

How can I support those in my life?

Listen without judgement: Every experience is unique.

Encourage healthy habits: Walking together, cooking nourishing meals, or simply reminding someone to rest can help.

Seek professional care: Podiatrists, GPs, and other clinicians can provide guidance on managing symptoms that affect mobility, bone health, and overall quality of life.

Let’s use today to break the silence, share knowledge, and show care for those in our lives going through menopause.
