COMMUNICATE : Independent Speech & Language Therapy

COMMUNICATE : Independent Speech & Language Therapy An Independent Speech & Language Therapy service for people with communication difficulties throughout Suffolk and East Anglia.

COMMUNICATE is a team of speech and language therapists; offering a specialist service across Suffolk and in to East Anglia. Our expertise enable us to effectively treat all paediatric communication difficulties, making therapy fun and engaging for the child but informative for parents. We also treat all adult communication difficulties, working with them to set and achieve meaningful and motivating goals. We see individual clients in the setting of their choice or in our clinic. COMMUNICATE also fulfil a number of contracts with early years settings, primary and secondary schools and special schools. We deliver a complete speech and language therapy service to our settings, dovetailing in with the NHS team and helping those settings to decrease their SLCN levels and increase their confidence in identification and management. Our training department regularly holds training courses on a variety of communication topics, these are often held at our clinic and range from 2hours to a full day. We also deliver bespoke training packages when requested, written and delivered to the client's wishes.

This term, as well as some ‘day in the lives’, you’ll also get a sneak peak into some of our therapy bags with our ‘let’s pack for speech therapy’ videos. Here, Gemma gives us a preview of what she has in her therapy bag when working specifically on the ‘sh’ sound, and we think it looks like great fun!

Welcome back to the start of the Spring Term!

First things first, we must give a belated ‘Thank you!’ to our wonderful winner of our Communicate Excellence Award for the second half of the Autumn Term.

A popular repeat nominee, here are some of the lovely things Bethan nominated Karen for!

‘Karen is a brilliant LSA to work with. She is really proactive in seeking out new activities, observing sessions, checking that what she’s doing is effective, and keeping me up to date on pupils’ progress. We’ve done several joint therapy sessions together which has been so helpful for us and the pupils. I think she’s great and the pupils are lucky to have her!’

Thank you so much Karen, for all your amazing work. We appreciate all you do, and hope you see this little shout out to thank you!

Our final ‘Meet the Team’ post for the Autumn Term, is our wonderful Johannah!

You might hear children referring to her as ‘Jo, Miss Jo, and Speech Lady’… Johannah responds to them all!

Within the team she holds additional training and special interest in supporting individuals with Stammering and Voice presentations, and also comes with a wealth of experience in Forest Schooling.
She even taught the team how to tie knots at a CPD day!

She loves a hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows, and a slice of home made Honey Cake.

Outside of work she’s a Woodland enthusiast, and also loves swimming in the sea!

Hannah was super excited to be hosting a stand at the virtual schools conference today!

Show casing some of what our lovely team get up to, she also had some of her books, to help in promoting accessible resources for individuals with SLCN.

Did you spot our stand there? 🤩

Take a little sneak peek into one of Hannah’s Therapy sessions!

We often work with little ones with high energy, and incorporating movement and some subtle ‘heavy work’ into our therapy sessions can really help to offer some Proprioceptive sensory feedback, which supports children to regulate their nervous system and focus or channel their attention.

Research links movement with new neuronal networks, and these new pathways can really help to support children to consolidate new skills - by linking speech sounds with movement, we are helping to make these skills more concrete.

They are also more memorable, as the child is having FUN!

As far as they are concerned? …they had an awesome time at Hannah’s obstacle course… there was so much focus on functional target words, they didn’t even realise they were also working on their speech sounds!

Do you incorporate movement and play into your therapy sessions?
Don’t forget to save and share this video with someone who’d love this low prep therapy idea 💡

Biscuit Bear has been zip lining! 😱

All Saints Church in Kesgrave, were kind enough to include him on some adventures this year - Thank you to Laura for taking him along!

He had a great time, and even managed to squeeze some opportunities for Speech and Language development in too!

He really enjoyed making predictions and thinking about ‘what might happen next?’.
Looking back at the photos to see what he did ‘before’ he got to the top, and how he felt was great fun! It was really helpful when adults helped to label those feelings with words like ‘nervous’, and ‘excited’. ‘After’ he got to the bottom, he felt ‘relieved!’ and ‘brave’!

The photos were great for practising sequencing what happened ‘First, Next, Last’, and we loved telling and showing other people what we got up to. It really helped to recap some of our past tense verbs like ‘climbed, pulled, sat’.

We can’t wait to see what he gets up to next! 👀
