Improve your TUG score! Part 2: The Tightrope Walk οΈβš–οΈ

The trickiest part of the TUG test isn't the walkingβ€”it’s the turn. If you feel wobbly when you turn around, try Tandem Walking.

β€’ How: Walk in a straight line, placing the heel of one foot directly in front of the toes of the other (like you’re on a tightrope).
β€’ Safety Tip: Do this next to a kitchen counter or hallway wall so you have something to grab!

β€’ Why: This trains your brain and ankles to maintain balance on a narrow base

What an absolutely brilliant day at Foxgrove πŸŽ‰ Foxgrove and Maynell House Residential Homes FELIXSTOWE

We had such an incredible time with our FitWord crossword class, and this week's subject, Robert Burns, truly got our brains buzzing! Everyone was so enthusiastic, solving clues and getting those mental muscles working.

But it wasn't just about brain teasing! We incorporated some fantastic fitness elements too, using sensory balls, bean bags (which brought out some serious competitive fun!), and resistance bands to keep us all moving and grooving. The energy in the room was electric – pure joy and excitement from start to finish!

And the highlight for many? Our beloved resident cat, Fred, decided to join in on the fun, adding an extra layer of cuteness and amusement to our already lively session! 😻 It's amazing to see everyone's enthusiasm for both mental and physical fitness.

Feeling so inspired by the spirit and engagement today! What a fantastic group!

Improve your TUG score! Part 1: The Power Move 🦡

The "Timed Up and Go" test starts with standing upβ€”and for many, that’s where the clock ticks the fastest.

To improve your speed and stability, practice Sit-to-Stands.

β€’ How: Sit on a sturdy chair, feet hip-width apart. Try to stand up without using your hands for a boost!

β€’ Why: This builds "explosive" leg power and improves your independence in daily life.

β€’ Challenge: Can you do 10 in a row with perfect form?

πŸ’‘ TIP OF THE WEEK: The "Timed Up and Go" (TUG) Test

Ever wondered how your mobility and balance stack up?. The TUG test is a simple, gold-standard tool used by healthcare professionals to assess functional movement and fall risk.

The best part? You can try it at home to see how you're doing!.

πŸ“ How to do it:

1. Set up: Use a sturdy chair with armrests. Mark a line on the floor exactly 3 meters (about 10 feet) away.

2. Start: Sit with your back against the chair and your arms on the armrests.

3. The Test: On "Go," stand up, walk to the 3m line at your normal pace, turn around, walk back, and sit down again.

4. Timing: Use a stopwatch. Start as soon as you say "Go" and stop when your bottom touches the seat.

⏱️ What the results mean:

β€’ Under 10 seconds: Excellent mobility!
β€’ 12–15 seconds: Good, but you may want to keep an eye on your balance.
β€’ Over 12–15 seconds: This can indicate a higher risk of falls.

Pro-Tip: If you use a walking aid (like a cane or walker), use it during the test!. If you’re feeling unsteady, have a friend stand nearby for safety.
