At Never Too Late, Mate, the team have been very disappointed recently with a number of social media screenshots that have been flagged to us showing people making light of the often devastating subject of self-harming. Not only does this have an impact on the person who is struggling to stop doing so, but it is deeply traumatic for friends and loved ones.
People who are going through this are often struggling with their mental health in general, and seeing others jokingly say that they are going to ‘self harm’ in an attempt to be humorous isn’t just potentially ‘triggering’ - it is reckless and irresponsible.
We are still seeing the fallout from the regrettable online reaction to Meghan Markle admitting that she was suicidal during her interview with Oprah, and specifically how people who are feeling suicidal may react to throwaway comments like ‘Ginge and Whinge’ or ‘don’t believe her - f*****g attention seeker.’ Would you honestly have the confidence to reach out for help in that sort of environment? We hoped that lessons would have been learned from that situation, but it’s clear that there is still work to do.
We’re not going to focus on the negatives here for too long - that’s not what we are about. Instead, we have started discussions with key partners today about developing a brand new way for people who are self-harming, people who are considering self-harming, and their friends and family to access vital support information right here on Facebook.
We are expanding Never Too Late, Mate’s su***de prevention and awareness package to cover everything from signposting about self-harm support to a closed and safe Facebook community where people can connect with experts without delay or judgement. We will then use the reach and influence of the Essex Coronavirus Action group of pages to make sure that we get all of this in front of as many people as possible.
We will have more news about this soon.
