IASTM (Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation) aka Graston and scraping
Yes, these look like tools of torture but in the right hands and with the correct training, IASTM can be a great aid to getting you moving again.
Like all manual therapy tools, there are lots of claims of what it can and cant do. My own belief is that it is the neurological effect that makes IASTM beneficial. The sensory input stimulates the nerve endings in the skin, which can decrease pain and help improve motor function.
This is generally not used as a whole treatment, but usually forms part of your treatment in the same way as we may use assisted stretching, soft tissue release or muscle energy techniques.
