Myth: If you can’t see it, it’s not a risk.

Rob, one of our trainers, explains why that couldn’t be further from the truth.

In confined spaces, some of the most dangerous hazards are invisible including colourless, odourless gases that can escalate quickly.

With the right planning, preparation and equipment, these risks can be controlled.

Make sure your team is trained to recognise and manage what they can’t see.

Take a look at our confined space courses here: https://bit.ly/4mpyJG0

Not all confined spaces are the same and treating them that way is where risk begins.

In this video, our trainer Kevin highlights that one of the most common misconceptions in confined space work is grouping every confined space environment together, rather than assessing each one on its own individual merit.

From varying hazards to different control measures, every confined space requires its own approach. Getting this right isn’t just best practice, it’s essential for keeping your people safe and your operations compliant.

At Citrus Training, we help teams build the knowledge and confidence to assess, plan and work safely in any confined space.

Who needs confined space training?

It extends beyond those entering the space. Anyone involved in the planning, supervision or delivery of the work should have an appropriate level of understanding.

Gaps in knowledge can lead to poor decisions, increased risk and compliance issues. A workforce that is trained at the right level is better equipped to plan safely and operate effectively.

The priority is not just entry, but ensuring everyone involved in the work has the right level of training.

Confined spaces are not always obvious and knowing how they’re defined is key to understanding when training is required.

Under UK regulations, a confined space is defined as:
An enclosed or partially enclosed area that has limited entry/exit point and poses a reasonably foreseeable risk of serious injury arising from hazardous substances or conditions.

For organisations, the need for training is determined by the level of risk present.

Training is typically required where there is potential for:
🔸 Loss of consciousness due to gas, fumes, vapour, lack of oxygen
🔸 Drowning / engulfment
🔸 Fire / explosion
🔸 Asphyxiation
🔸 Heat-related issues

Where a likely danger exists, appropriate training and competency are essential to ensure safe entry and work.

Yesterday we opened the doors of our training centre as a part of Build UK’s Open Doors: Get Into Construction initiative.

We welcomed members of the local community to our headquarters, giving them a hands-on insight into the wide range of roles across the industry. Visitors had the opportunity to meet our expert trainers, try out equipment and ask questions about working in construction.

Our visitors enjoyed activities from a range of specialities, including:
🔸 Plant
🔸 Confined Space
🔸 NRSWA
🔸 ‘About construction’ information session.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us, we’re incredibly grateful for the positive feedback:

’It was magnificent! I loved the experience and I really enjoyed my time; everyone was so polite and interactive with us as soon as we got to the premises, I was so interested in it and still want to know so much more. Well done; and I hope you guys do just as well or even better for the future, and I wish I could do it again’

Feedback like this highlights just how important events like are in inspiring the next generation and showcasing the opportunities our industry has to offer.

An NVQ is a one-time achievement that recognises competence for life.

In this short video, Phil, one of our NVQ assessors, clears up a common misconception about NVQs and CSCS cards.

Once achieved, an NVQ is for life. It does not expire or require renewal.

What does need updating is the CSCS card, whether gold or black, and this is renewed every five years by completing the Health and Safety test.

For employers, this provides long-term value. The competence is permanently recognised, supporting workforce credibility, compliance and progression without the need to repeat qualifications.

NVQ evidence isn’t created, it’s captured from the working day.

In this video, Ben, one of our NVQ assessors explains what gathering evidence really involves.

NVQs assess day-to-day competence in the workplace. Evidence will look different for each individual because every role carries different responsibilities.

In reality, many routine responsibilities already count as evidence:
✅Completing site paperwork.
✅Delivering a toolbox talk.
✅Leading a meeting.
✅Coordinating work on site.
✅Recording short videos of routine activities .

With the right structure and guidance, evidence gathering fits around operational delivery rather than disrupting it.

For organisations planning NVQs across their workforce, understanding how evidence is gathered gives confidence that the process works alongside day-to-day operations.
