Remaining Active in Pregnancy

Pregnancy is too often surrounded by "don't", "I wouldn't" and "you shouldn't".
How about we focus on what you CAN do instead?
Remaining active in pregnancy has many benefits for both you and baby. You don't need to over complicate it - it can be as simple as going for a walk.
Some enjoy going for a swim or antenatal yoga.

Exercise will help keep you fit, produce endorphins and can assist get the baby into optimal position for birth which can in turn help you prepare for labour.
I discuss the importance of posture and exercise further in my Hypnobirthing course.

What is your favourite form of exercise in pregnancy?

Thought for the day -

This is a postcard I found on a holiday a while ago. It resonated with me - so many positive turns have taken place in my life because of things not going to plan.
Hypnobirthing is one of those - a family member who is a midwife mentioned Hypnobirthing to a young, terrified, pregnant me. It not only led to amazingly positive birth experiences. It gave me a new passion, career and way of life.

The fourth trimester -

Baby is here and all they want for Christmas is you. So cuddle, snuggle and allow yourself as much rest as you can. Especially during this in between phase where no one knows what day it is! This precious family time post labour is not often discussed. But the first three months post birth are worth planning - this period is often referred to as "the fourth trimester". So get freezer food, accept help from those around you, lower your expectations and pressure on yourself and make space for that new bundle in your life. It will allow you to heal and it will allow baby to adjust to this new often overwhelming world.

Trying to "bounce back" is a myth - however you have birthed your body has been through a lot and needs time to recuperate. Sending love to all of you enjoying or looking forward to baby snuggles this Christmas and New Year.

The original calm birth story -

Just snuggling down with my small person the read a positive, calm birth story.
It's definitely not how she "planned" but how about we find the positives.
It was calm, it was dim, it was unobserved (unless you count the animals!).
The process of birth hasn't changed since this story was written - just our understanding of it. If our knowledge works together with our care we have the makings for many more lovely calm births.

Wishing you all a lovely Christmas.

Affirmations -

Whether or not you are aware of it we ALL use affirmations daily.
These are statements we tell ourselves everyday. If you say "it's going to be a hard day" in your mind enough then your mind will seek out evidence to prove you right. But this can also be flipped on it's head and used in a positive way. If you begin to state "today will be great" then your mind will seek out the positive evidence to prove you right. Our minds love to be right.

In birth we use affirmations to help you get your head in a positive mindset. Affirmations are personal and it's worth looking for what resonates with you. My favourite is "Just Breathe" because of it's simplicity. You don't need to make an effort to recall it and can use it birthing anywhere. Some prefer "I am strong" or "I am excited to birthing my baby". The use of birth affirmations is one of many tools used in Hypnobirthing to help shift your mindset from fear based to positive and prepared.

Where do you want to have your baby?

Many people are not aware they have a choice where they birth.

Here in the UK there are three main choices which are -
Home birth
Midwife led birth centre - may or may not be attached to a hospital
Labour ward or obstetric unit

This decision depends on a number of factors.
Where do you feel safest?
What support do you need both physically and mentally?

The environment you birth in can effect the birth you have. Physical factors like lighting, sound and smell can impact the hormones at play in your labour. You want as many endorphins flowing through you as you can - when assessing a birth place think would I nap in here? If the answer is yes then it may be a good choice for you. Dim lighting, the feeling of privacy and safety all help facilitate the hormones at play in labour. This is explained in so much more detail in my Hypnobirthing course.

If you want to see what the NICE guidelines are on birth place I've included it through the link in my bio or contact me for booking onto my next course. If this was useful do share, save or tag someone you think would find this useful.

UFO - upright forward open.

Check out Elfie - not only is she remaining active by still delivering advent calendar baubles and snacking on my gingerbread house but she is in a position she finds comfortable.

UFO - upright forward open allows more space in the pelvis for baby to descend and facilitate a more comfortable birth.

Birth Position can make such a difference in labour. Which is discussed in more detail in my HypnoBirthing course - link in bio.

Find your happy place - Just add water

Searching through my photos the other day I discovered how many of my happy memories are linked to water. Whether it's swimming in it, playing with it or birthing in it. Water really is my happy place.

Memories like this are more beneficial than you might think. If you can close your eyes and take your mind to a place you feel safe, calm and happy your body will follow. Physiological changes will take place to help you calm. This can be a useful tool to help you remain calm in labour or any other time you want a sense of peace. Give it a try.
I explain this in a lot more detail on my HypnoBirthing course - click the the about tab to find contact details.
What's your happy place?
