West Middlesex University Hospital

West Middlesex University Hospital West Middlesex University Hospital is part of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, one of the top ranked and top performing trusts in the UK.

Our Trust employs more than 6,000 staff over our two main hospital sites, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and West Middlesex University Hospital, and across 12 community-based clinics within North West London. We pride ourselves on providing outstanding care to a community of over 1.5 million people. Both hospitals have major A&E departments, treating more than 300,000 patients each year. The Trust is the second largest maternity service in England, delivering more than 11,000 babies every year. In partnership with our hospital charity CW+ we build and enhance clinical facilities to create an outstanding care environment for our patients and for our staff. We are growing our existing portfolio of innovation projects and our reputation in this field, to become a national leader for innovation within the NHS. We aspire to provide locally-based and accessible services enhanced by world-class clinical expertise. Our excellent financial and operational performance is a source of great pride to us. It is nationally recognised and sees us simultaneously achieving our financial plan while continuing to be one of the best performers against the national access standards for accident and emergency (A&E), referral to treatment (RTT) and cancer. Through the Health and Care Partnership (HCP) in both North West and South West London we work as a wider health system to drive improvements to care, and to deliver integrated care in Hammersmith and Fulham, Hounslow and West London and beyond.

Since July 2024, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has been taking part in The Generation Study, screening newborns for over 200 rare but treatable conditions.

👶 So far:
• 2,440 babies enrolled across both hospitals
• 1,721+ samples collected from umbilical cord blood

This research aims to help identify rare conditions earlier, giving children the best chance for timely treatment.

🤰 Expectant parents can speak to their midwife to learn more. Participation is free and optional.

💬 Emily, who had her baby at West Middlesex University Hospital said: "The maternity team have been incredibly supportive. Signing up was easy, and the whole process was also explained during an appointment, which gave us the chance to ask questions and talk everything through in detail. The results came through quickly - we received them a couple of weeks after our son was born."

Last week we marked National Apprenticeship Week, and celebrated 116 colleagues who have successfully completed their apprenticeship programmes across clinical and non-clinical services this year.

This year’s cohort reflects the breadth of opportunity across the Trust, with colleagues qualifying as Healthcare Support Workers, Nursing Associates, Registered Nurses, Advanced Clinical Practitioners and Pharmacy Technicians. Non-clinical apprentices have completed programmes in leadership, education, digital and data, business administration and information governance.

Apprenticeships remain a vital route for career development, supporting colleagues to build skills while continuing to deliver high-quality care and services.

Thank you to the managers, mentors and teams who have supported our apprentices, and congratulations to all who have completed their programme this year.

Our Trust has launched a new physiologist‑led valve clinic, giving patients faster access to specialist assessment and earlier diagnosis of heart valve disease.

Opened last month, the service is expected to support 200–250 patients in its first year across both Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and West Middlesex University Hospital — increasing to 400–500 patients a year as the clinic grows.

❤️ Why this matters
Heart valve disease affects how blood flows through the heart and often develops silently. Early detection is key, helping prevent complications and ensuring timely treatment.

Mary J. O’Donoghue, one of the first patients to attend the clinic said: “I was reviewed at the valve clinic and was extremely satisfied with the care I received. I felt well supported and reassured throughout my appointment. I will return in six months for further monitoring and additional care if needed.”
