There has been a lot of media attention recently following an incident at the BAFTAs involving Tourette syndrome advocate John Davidson. The discussion that followed has highlighted just how much misunderstanding still exists around Tourette’s and how tics can present.

This article by neuroscientist Dr Melissa Licari offers a clear explanation of Tourette’s, the different types of tics people experience, and why some vocal outbursts are entirely involuntary. It is a helpful read for anyone wanting a better understanding of the condition.

Please excuse any delays in replies this week — my productivity has been temporarily overtaken by a small chunky floofy puppy 🐾

Emails are being answered this evening… honestly! 😄

Today marks 10 years of my supervision Facebook group, which also means I’ve been a supervisor for over a decade now!!
I run both a supervision group and one-to-one supervision; Many people in my group have been with me since the beginning, and it’s become what I wanted it to be, a network of self employed therapist who feel part of a wider supportive group. We got through lockdown together, and many went on to contribute to our book that supports the wider therapy community- this still feels pretty significant.
I’m grateful to everyone who’s been part of it over the years. Here’s to keeping supervision wholesome, supportive and enjoyable!!

I often work with couples where one partner is experiencing deep emotional pain. Again and again, it’s empathy — not fixing, advising or rescuing — that creates real connection and healing. Sympathy and problem-solving are well-intentioned, but they often miss what the other person actually needs in that moment.
This short video beautifully explains how empathy can help ease someone’s pain and suffering.

What is the best way to ease someone's pain and suffering? In this beautifully animated RSA Short, Dr Brené Brown reminds us that we can only create a genuin...

People need people
by Benjamin Zephaniah

People need people,
To walk to
To talk to
To cry and rely on,
People will always need people.
To love and to miss
To hug and to kiss,
It’s useful to have other people.
To whom to moan
If you’re all alone,
It’s so hard to share
When no one is there.
There’s not much to do
When there’s no one but you.
People will always need people.
To please
To tease
To put you at ease,
People will always need people.
To make life appealing
And give life some meaning,
It’s useful to have other people.
It you need a change
To whom will you turn.
If you need a lesson
From whom will you learn.
If you need to play
You’ll know why I say
People will always need people.
As girlfriends
As boyfriends
From Bombay
To Ostend,
People will always need people-
To have friendly fights with
And share tasty bites with,
It’s useful to have other people.
People live in families
Gangs, posses and packs,
Its seems we need company
Before we relax,
So stop making enemies
And let’s face the facts,
People will always need people,
Yes
People will always need people.

🧠 Fun brain fact for your day…
Recent research is showing even more clearly that your brain doesn’t fully settle down until your early 30s. New research shows the “adolescent” brain stage actually runs from about age 9 right through to 30-ish.

This doesn’t mean teenagers are tiny adults – it just means your brain is still fine-tuning things like emotions, decision-making and stress well into your twenties.

From a therapy point of view, this is actually really hopeful.

If life feels messy, intense or confusing in your teens or twenties – you’re not failing, you’re developing. Things really do get easier to manage as you get older.

And it’s a good reminder of why leaning on older, steadier people helps so much. Parents, grandparents, mentors, friends – borrowing someone else’s calm while your brain is still under construction is not weakness, it’s smart. 💛

You’re not supposed to do life alone.

Study suggests brain development has four pivotal ‘turning points’ at around the ages of nine, 32, 66 and 83

🌿 A little update! 🌿

I’m so happy to share that my in-person sessions have finally moved to my new therapy space — a beautiful old Georgian house that we're gradually bringing back to life.

The therapy room itself is all ready and feels calm, light and welcoming, though the rest of the house is still very much mid-renovation (so please excuse any slightly less polished corners!).

It already feels like the perfect space to settle, reflect and breathe — I can’t wait to welcome you in. 💚

📢 We have just launched an urgent fundraiser to secure the future of Breathworks.

Right now, Breathworks is facing a particularly challenging time. Demand for our support has never been higher - more people are living with chronic pain and long-term illness, yet fewer can afford to access help.

We need to raise £50,000 by 31st December to safeguard our charity and continue reaching those who need us most.

Every donation counts - if everyone in our community gave just £5, we’d reach our target.

Can you be one of our early supporters?

Donations made in the first 48 hours give our campaign crucial momentum - helping our campaign reach more people and inspiring others to give.

Thank you for your support - every donation brings us closer to a future where no one faces pain and illness alone.
