Happy 2026 to everyone that wants to make the United Kingdom their home.

My resolution is to do what I can to mean you feel welcome, and can be who you are.

Unity and togetherness because of our differences, not despite them.

I've started my Christmas break with a wintery walk with as he prepares to trek from Lands End to John O'Groats to raise money for in 2026.

We get so little daylight in the winter that it was great to not only be outside when it's not raining, bit to get some blue sky too 😍

Got a never ending to-do list in the run up to Christmas? Put 'rest' near the top πŸ₯°

Ever wondered what impact you make on others?

It's something I reflect on often, both in my personal world, and professional life as a counsellor and supervisor.

I refuse to believe that inequality is inevitable or desirable.

I almost definitely 'human'. And know that my clients and supervisees are too.

It's OK to be human with me, and I'll be human with you. Let's be unsure at times & make mistakes together.

Counsellors and supervisors talk a lot about self care, so I thought I'd share pictures of some of what works for me.

Dancing (I love a day festival πŸ’ƒπŸ½)
Getting outside (having a dog helps with motivation🐢)
Eating out (it always feels like a treat πŸ˜‹)
Spin class (I never regret going πŸš΄πŸ½β€β™€οΈ)

Recognising and valuing our complex identities, along with those we support, is vital. Our identities are multifaceted, involving race, gender, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status, as KimberlΓ© Crenshaw's concept of intersectionality highlights. By acknowledging these layers, we foster inclusivity, celebrating our diverse identities.

No-one is 'less than' because of their difference.

I'd always thought about this quote as being about a personal journey, but now I think about it as being about professional journeys too.

Like a lot of other counsellors I came to the profession later in my working life, having already qualified as a social worker, and having an established career in drug and alcohol treatment.

To others it didn't make sense that I wanted to retrain. I already had lots of qualifications, I was already supporting people.

Once qualified, and with years of client experience, it doesn't make sense to some that I have no desire to teach or run courses, or write articles or books.

I now supervise trainee and qualified counsellors, alongside my client work.

This is my journey.
It doesn't have to make sense to everyone else - it only has to make sense to me.

What has your professional journey been like?
