☘️ Happy St Patrick’s Day from Jigsaw & Smokey ☘️

Today we’re celebrating two of our wonderful Irish Cobs, Jigsaw and Smokey, and their proud Irish heritage.

Irish Cobs (often known as Gypsy Cobs) originated in Ireland and the UK, traditionally bred by travelling families to be strong, kind and dependable all-round horses.

A few lovely facts about these special horses:

☘️ Irish Cobs were historically used to pull traditional caravans (vardos) for travelling families.
☘️ They were bred to be calm, sensible and people-focused, making them wonderful family and working horses.
☘️ Their strength and sturdy build meant they could work all day while still being gentle enough for children to handle.
☘️ Their famous feathered legs and flowing manes helped protect them from the wet and muddy conditions they often lived in.

That same kind temperament and steady nature is exactly why horses like Jigsaw and Smokey are so incredible within equine assisted learning. They are patient, intuitive and incredibly tolerant with the young people we support.

Today we’re celebrating their heritage, their kindness, and the amazing role they play here at TEAL. 💚

Irish horses have always been known for their heart, strength and loyalty… and we feel very lucky to have two of the very best. ☘️🐴

🐴 Learning by doing…

Today our students were practising bandaging techniques, not just on the horses but on each other too!

Bandaging is an important skill within our Equine Education course, helping students understand:

• How to apply even pressure
• When and why bandages are used
• First aid for horses
• Supporting injuries
• Box rest care
• Protection during travel

Before working on the horses, students practise on each other so they can understand how the pressure should feel when applied correctly, helping ensure horses remain comfortable and safe.

Hands-on learning like this helps students build confidence while developing real horse care skills used across the equine industry.

🌱 Skills developed today:

• Practical animal care
• Understanding equine health and welfare
• Problem solving
• Communication and teamwork
• Confidence through hands-on learning

This kind of practical learning is what makes alternative education with horses so powerful.

Meet Gizmo… the newest little visitor at TEAL! 🐶

Gizmo is Lisa’s new puppy and he’ll be making the occasional appearance around the yard as he learns the ropes of life at TEAL.

At 18 weeks old, Gizmo is a French Bulldog × Jack Russell… so we’re calling him a “French Russell”! 😄

He’s currently learning all about:

🐾 meeting new people
🐾 making friends with the other dogs
🐾 staying calm around horses
🐾 exploring the yard safely
🐾 and of course… accepting lots of cuddles!

So far he’s been loving every minute of meeting everyone and investigating the yard (even if he’s still figuring out some of the muddy bits!).

Like all young dogs around horses, we take introductions slowly so he can learn to be safe, calm and respectful around the big four-legged residents.

Safe to say Gizmo has already won a few hearts here at TEAL.

Welcome to TEAL Gizmo! 🐾

What do you think of the name “French Russell”? 😄

🐾 Ripple’s job today…

• Classroom supervisor
• Feed chart quality control
• Professional stick holder
• Unofficial teaching assistant

Today one of our students has been working on designing a feed chart for the horses, and Ripple made sure he was there to carefully supervise the process.

This was a really thoughtful piece of work, considering:

🐴 What feed is best for each horse
🌾 How much hay they need
💊 What supplements may be required
🌿 Turnout time and grazing
🏇 Exercise levels
🧬 Breed differences
🩺 Any medical conditions

There’s a lot more to feeding horses properly than simply filling a bucket, and understanding why we feed what we feed is an important part of learning good horse care.

Ripple clearly felt this task required very close supervision…

Although we’re not entirely sure how helpful he was while holding that stick. 😅🐾

Every great horse starts with a great mum…
This is Ben as a foal with his mum Mearl. 🐴💛

🌸 Happy Mother’s Day 🌸

Seeing this photo reminds us how important those early bonds are.

Foals usually stand within an hour of birth, and within a few hours they are already following their mum, learning how to move, stay safe and understand herd life.

Mares teach their foals confidence, communication and trust — lessons that stay with them for life.

Watching Ben grow from this tiny foal into the horse he is today is a reminder of how powerful those early connections are.

At TEAL CIC, we see every day how horses help young people learn the same skills — confidence, patience and trust.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful human and equine mums out there. 💛

Do you remember the first horse that stole your heart? 🐴

🌧🐴 So thankful for our Jelka Group Top Clean Mud Mats!

After the amount of rain we’ve had over the past few months, we honestly couldn’t be more appreciative of this huge mud-free space for the horses.

The mats create a solid hard-standing area, keeping things mud-free while allowing the horses to move comfortably between the loafing area, grass and track system, hay stations, shelters and the big barn.

They’ve also made a wheelchair accessible space for our clients, which is incredibly important for the inclusive work we do here at TEAL CIC.

A special mention for Jigsaw, who has done so well this winter with her arthritis. Being able to keep moving freely without battling deep mud has made such a difference to her comfort and mobility.

Sometimes it’s the simple things that make the biggest difference for horse welfare and accessibility.

Huge thanks to Jelka Group for helping make this possible! 🙌

🌼 Signs of Spring at TEAL CIC! 🌼

The daffodils are blooming, the days are getting a little longer… and Ripple has clearly decided spring has officially arrived! 🌞🐾

We’re not entirely sure if he’s admiring the daffodils or just proudly showing off his latest treasure… but either way he seems very pleased with himself! 😄

Spring is slowly starting to appear around the yard, bringing brighter mornings, lighter evenings, and hopefully a little less mud soon!

There’s something special about this time of year — new growth, fresh energy, and a reminder that warmer days are on the way. 🌱

And if Ripple has anything to say about it… spring also means more time outside supervising everyone’s work! 🐶
