Be sure to advocate for what you want. There should not be a rush to say goodbye.

It is possible to find out if an estranged friend or relative has died?

These are my suggestions (but not guarantees) in order of potential success:

Search the general register office death index which maintains an official register of death and if you find a likely match you can order a death certificate. https://www.gov.uk/research-family-history

The government probate search https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/ allows you to look up willls and grants of probate. If someone died and left assets then probate may well have been applied for.

Check local death notices and funeral announcements in newspapers and try obituary sites like legacy.com, https://www.muchloved.com/
Try contacting the local council co if you have a legitimate reason to do so.

I hope these are helpful, thank you for reading.

You might find that memories of past funerals all blur into one.

The location, everyone wearing black, the hearse, limousines, top hats, flowers, urns, who was there that day… the list goes on.

In this country, traditional funeral ceremonies are still the norm - they are considered β€œa given”.

You’ll rarely see an alternative or eco-friendly funeral represented on television or in film.

On top of that, decision making feels so hard when you are grieving. This is one reason most people choose a β€œset menu” of hearses, flowers, limos and so on.
When you’re grieving, this choice can look like the most β€œstraight-forward” way to arrange the day.

It isn’t.

When a family asks me to visit, I always ask them - β€œhow would you like to feel on the day?”

Often this question upturns the entire concept of a funeral in their minds. They are suddenly free to choose ANYTHING.

A funeral is there for the living – for those of us left behind. They are our opportunity to say goodbye to someone special in a way that truly reflects their unique life.

Grief is a journey that takes time - and the circumstances around the death of a loved one or loved ones has a great impact on the intensity and length of feelings of loss.

My parents both died within a year of each other. Sometimes I think of them every day and other times I don’t.

I am a funeral director and celebrant, not a therapist. Working with people who are grieving has taught me a lot about life, love and the amazing connections we hold with one another.

What I do know is the importance of having a farewell that is meaningful and thoughtful. Every family I’ve ever worked with had their own unique way of saying their goodbye.

If you are grieving - be gentle with yourself. It takes time to find a new normal, and grief feels different to everyone.
