When I trained at The Urdang Academy and danced on stage, I learned early on that my body wasn’t enough the way it was. Comments, comparisons, mirror critiques -they shift from feedback into beliefs.

The study on self-objectification found that the more women internalised appearance ideals (taught by media, peers, coaches), the lower their self-esteem and the higher their body-shame and surveillance.

As a hypnotherapist I’ve seen how this shows up:
• undervaluing your work or voice
• hesitating to ask for more
• playing small so you don’t “rock the boat”

Because unconsciously you think your value comes from how you look, not what you bring.

To appear confident on the outside, while shrinking on the inside?

So many women carry silent shame, born from moments where they felt powerless, unheard, or unworthy.

When you've spent years dancing professionally, the mirror, the costume, the critique all become part of your story. You learn to perform your body before you perform your art.

Research shows women who internalise societal standards of appearance engage in self-objectification, they constantly monitor their looks and feel shame when they don’t meet the ideal. Young dancers and athletes are especially at risk of self-objectification.

That internal dialogue - “Am I good enough?” “Do I measure up?” Doesn’t just stay in your body image. It leaks into your value. It impacts your confidence, your voice, your ability to ask for more and charge what you’re worth.
