Our amazing enhanced recovery programme for colorectal patients is helping people to get safely home after surgery sooner than ever before.

And its shorter length-of-stays, and less patients needing intensive care treatments afterwards, mean its results are some of the best in the country.

The winning formula has been established through a combination of dedicated pre and post operative care with the support of a ward team, along with the use of high-technology via a mobile phone app called PostOp developed at KGH.

As a relatively small hospital, compared with many other large specialist hospitals, we are doing extraordinarily well. Our length of stay for colorectal cancer surgery are on average four to five days. Comparable hospitals have stays averaging five to six days and some have stays as long as 11 days.

The Enhanced Recovery Programmes works by:

• Giving colorectal patients a comprehensive pre-operative assessment – which is at least an hour long

• The Geddington Ward surgical team consistently delivering a specific Enhanced Recovery Programme

• Using a mobile phone Post Op app. This specialised enhanced recovery App enables patients to answer key questions about their recovery through mobile phone questionnaires as well as posting pictures and video of their wounds for doctors and nurses to study.

Our amazing cardiac MRI team have won two national awards for the way they work together to provide good patient care.

They have won the Society of Radiographer’s Midlands Radiology Team of the Year 2025 and the Patient’s Choice Award for Exceptional Care 2025.

The national Radiography Awards celebrate the stand-out individuals and teams from across the UK who have made a positive difference to patient care, service delivery, or those who have excelled academically. Winners announced in Radiography Awards 2025! | SoR

The team submitted evidence for the awards including:

• The development of a successful in-house Cardiac MRI (CMR) service at KGH (previously outsourced) which supports cardiac MRI referrals from both the Kettering and Northampton sites, with over 4,000 scans performed to date.

• Pioneering safe and effective MRI scanning of patients with pacemakers, a cohort previously referred to tertiary centres. This has enabled nearly 1,000 pacemaker MRI scans reducing patient waits and travel times

Pictured are KGH CT MRI radiographers Pavan Kumar Harish and Bala Selvakumar – second and third from left – receiving the awards from representatives of the Society of Radiographers.

Today we are celebrating World Radiography Day 2025! 💙🩻

Around 90% of patients will interact with a radiographer at some point during their care which shows how essential radiology has become in modern medicine; using advanced imaging to help clinicians diagnose and treat patients with precision and care.

We are proud of our radiography teams for their expertise, compassion and commitment to delivering safe, high-quality care every day. Thank you for the vital role our Radiographers and their teams play in patient care and the NHS.

Our amazing research and clinical teams are working together in a pioneering piece of research to see if bone fractures are connected with coeliac disease.

The aim is to find out if patients who have broken a bone should be tested for coeliac disease enabling them to be diagnosed early before complications of the disease worsen.

The study is being led by Dr Ajay Verma, the University Hospitals of Northamptonshire’s Director of Research & Innovation, and is a collaboration between the hospital’s fracture clinic, its gastroenterology department, and its research team.

Coeliac disease is a medical condition where the body has an inflammatory reaction to gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye.

It can affect bone health, as the body may not be able to absorb enough vitamin D, which can lead to osteoporosis or osteopenia (weaker bones).

The study, called BRACE-1, was launched in 2022 and has now just closed after achieving its target of recruiting 1,200 KGH patients into the study.

Dr Verma said: “This is a huge achievement by the Kettering Research Team, and our fracture clinic and research team colleagues have recruited our final patients to the BRACE-1 study.

“It is unusual for a study of this size to be exclusively conducted at a district general hospital. This sets the precedent so that further studies can be conceived and run at Kettering General Hospital, and Northampton General Hospital, for the benefit of our patients.”
