A terrific trio of performers visited some of our youngest patients when we welcomed the Blanket Fort Club to our Skylark ward recently. They joined us for a very special and festive performance of the ‘The Elf Who Stole My Shoe’.

Set in cobbler’s shop, Matt plays the Cobbler who asks the audience to play detective and find out just who is tinkering with his newly mended shoes.

This interactive performance had the audience shouting out guesses and helping the Cobbler to discover the true intention behind this not-so-naughty Elf.

Jack is the Stage Manager, and he explained why it’s important for their troupe to bring performances to young people in hospital.

“We know that children and young people might be in hospital over Christmas and so we want to spread the joy and happiness of this season directly to them.”

Our audience loved this festive tale and we’re so thankful to Jack, Matt and director (and Elf wrangler) George.

No elves were harmed in the production of this play.

A volunteer who provides fantastic holistic therapies for people using our Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Centre has done well in a national award.

Joanne Smeathers was runner up in the national Macmillan Cancer Support’s ‘Thanks to You Awards 2025’ in the With Heart Award category.

She received heart-warming nominations from people living with cancer as well as Macmillan Centre staff who have benefitted from the therapy support she provides each week which includes reiki, reflexology, aromatherapy.

Her nominators said: “Jo is kind, compassionate, and deeply dedicated to supporting patients. She takes time to listen, comfort, and guide them with care and respect, often going above and beyond her role.

“Through her volunteering, Joanne helps people to manage pain, anxiety, fatigue, and sleeplessness and her sessions create a space where patients can simply rest — emotionally, mentally, and physically.”

Well done Joanne for your outstanding contribution to the care of our patients.

We are fitting 1,700 solar panels to our roofs to help us to reduce yearly energy bills by around £150,000.

We received £713,00 from a national package of funding to help the NHS become more energy efficient.

Work has just started and will be completed by April next year with panels on the roof of the hospital’s main ward block, Treatment Centre, Cardiac Centre, and Prince William Education Centre Library.

The work is separate to our planned new £57m Energy Centre, on which enabling work is currently underway near the hospital’s Treatment Centre.

The panels alone will enable us to reduce our carbon emissions by about 188 tons of CO₂ each year and over the system’s lifetime it will be the equivalent of planting 35,570 trees.

Well done to our estates team for securing this funding and making another step towards our greener energy use future.

The solar panels pictured are already on the roof of our sister hospital Northampton General Hospital where £20m of energy improvements were delivered in February.

Work on our new Energy Centre is underway. This key project will help us to reduce carbon emissions, improve energy efficiency, and support a greener future for our hospital and community. This is part of our commitment to sustainability and delivering care in an environmentally responsible way.

As part of these works, 14 parking bays at the front of the hospital will be closed from 1 December to 19 December. Vehicles can still enter and exit for patient drop-off via the normal exit on Rothwell Road, from outside Maxillo Facial, where pedestrian access will be maintained as far as possible. If possible, please use Rothwell Road or the ramp near the Centenary Wing for easier access.

Need wheelchair support? Please book your meet and greet service with our Volunteers Office: 01536 491589 or 01536 491599

Thank you for your understanding as we work towards a brighter, more energy efficient future for everyone.

Our final award of the night goes to the Pneumonia team. They won in the category of UHN Clinical Stars Team Award.

Their work has led to a two-day reduction in average length of stay, an 18% reduction in readmission rates, and a 20% reduction in mortality compared to the national average. These outcomes are complemented by consistently high patient satisfaction scores, reflecting the team’s dedication to both quality and kindness. They established a pneumonia virtual ward improving continuity of care and supporting earlier, safer discharges

Our penultimate award of the night is the UHN Non-Clinical Stars Team Award sponsored by SmartCo Future Health.

This award celebrates teams who lead the way by working collaboratively and has been won by the Electronic Patient Record (EPR) team.

“Over three years, they worked tirelessly from conception of a new EPR to engaging over 150 clinical, operational, and digital colleagues in procurement, through to mobilising 200 colleagues for the successful go-live of Nervecentre.

They showed outstanding collaboration across clinical and non-clinical areas, training staff, resolving issues, and supporting colleagues through change. Their dedication ensured continuity of care and a positive experience for patients and staff alike.

Congratulations to the EPR team on their win

Our volunteers offer amazing support to our patients and colleagues. The UHN Star Volunteer of the Year Award for 2025 is Joyce Crowther.

Our judges were bowled over by the nomination:

“Joyce is truly one of those exceptional individuals who consistently goes above and beyond to support both patients and staff. She currently volunteers as a Brew Buddy, supports in the Discharge Lounge, ensuring patients feel cared for and reassured during their transition home and in the Emergency Department, where she keeps a watchful eye to make sure patients stay hydrated and comfortable during what can often be a stressful time. Joyce also plays a key role in welcoming and supporting new volunteers.

Congratulations to Joyce

Congratulations to the Bereavement Midwives and Support Workers who have won the UHN Patient Choice Award for NGH.

The nomination came from a family who experienced excellent care. They said in their nomination:

“I am nominating this team due to their exceptional care during our stay in hospital, after our daughter was stillborn. We were never pressured to make any immediate decisions, we were given options of care, expert knowledge and respected to make our own decisions about the care we received as a family, while knowing we would be supported fully by this team. During such shock and heartbreak it is impossible to know what you need, but this team helped us to make treasured memories with our daughter before leaving the hospital without her. The team bought us comfort when we needed it most and we felt confident in their advice and guidance on how to navigate the world of baby loss. They are currently supporting us through our rainbow pregnancy which we could not do without their empathy and expertise.

Congratulations to the Bereavement Midwives and Support Workers at NGH

For our next award we turned to our local community for nominations. There are two awards in the UHN Patient Choice Award – one for NGH and one for KGH.

The winer if the KGH UHN Patient Choice Award is Raji Rajan Joseph.

This nomination came in from a family member of a young patient. They said “I was in Paediatric ED with my younger son, needing an admission.

We were waiting for a bed and Raji called the bed manager, she acted swiftly and made all the arrangements, coming to me and sat down and said ‘we are here for you’.

She took me to the vending machine for my elder sons crisps but it was broken. She and her colleague later came to Skylark ward with crisps and Maltesers which my son likes. She is such a kind person who has a kind heart and needs the best recognition in the world.

Congratulations to Raji Rajan Joseph
