What are “early” cataracts? 👁️
When most people think of cataracts, they imagine very advanced, cloudy vision.
But cataracts don’t suddenly appear overnight.
They develop gradually — and many people sit in the “early cataract” stage for years.
You may be told:
“It’s not bad enough for surgery yet.”
But that doesn’t mean your vision feels normal.
Early cataracts can cause:
• Glare and halos (especially at night)
• Difficulty driving in the dark
• Washed-out colours
• Reduced contrast
• Blurred or fluctuating vision
• Increasing dependence on brighter light
For some patients, these symptoms significantly impact work, driving, and quality of life — even if they don’t meet NHS treatment thresholds.
That’s where a detailed private assessment can help.
In selected patients, earlier lens surgery can restore clarity, improve visual quality, and reduce reliance on glasses — rather than waiting for vision to deteriorate further.
If your sight feels “not quite right,” even though you’ve been told it’s early — it’s worth a proper conversation.
