NHS Scotland Cochlear Implant Programme

NHS Scotland Cochlear Implant Programme Welcome to the official SCIP page. For children, being able to hear clearly is key to developing spoken language.

This page is for:
- communicating with patients and professionals.
- sharing news relating to the SCIP.
- posting videos and information on advice and troubleshooting.
- sharing information about upcoming events. The Scottish Cochlear Implant Programme at University Hospital Crosshouse provides a national cochlear implant service for hearing impaired adults and children from throughout Scotland. NHS Ayrshire and Arran is commissioned to deliver this service by the National Services Division of NHS National Services Scotland. The main aim of cochlear implantation is to provide access to spoken language in patients with permanent, bilateral, severe to profound sensorineural deafness, who do not gain adequate benefit from conventional acoustic hearing aids. For adults and older children, this intervention is mainly directed at those who have lost their hearing (gradually or suddenly) and have already developed spoken language in childhood. The main objective is to enable these individuals to continue to communicate by talking/listening through improved hearing from a cochlear implant. For those who are born with a significant hearing loss in both ears, this may be achievable if cochlear implantation is carried out in early childhood (ideally between the ages of 12 to 18 months). The window of opportunity is limited and outcomes are compromised if cochlear implantation is delayed beyond the age of 3 years old.

One of our patients, Abu, is currently studying an HND in Sports Coaching at college. As a CI user themselves they are interested to look at how CIs have impacted people in sport. They are looking for volunteers to help them with their project. This is suitable for any CI user who has taken part in any sporting activity of any ability at any level. Here is a link to the survey.

Tinnitus Awareness Week 2026

Do you find tinnitus bothersome when you take your processor off at night?

Did you know, you can keep your processor on at night or put it on during the night, if you are suffering from a bad spell of tinnitus.
This can allow you to have masking sounds such as nature sounds or white noise playing in the room or streamed straight to your processor.

If you do wear your processor all night, please consider your skin health, watching out for any redness or pain under the magnet.

If you have any questions, please contact us at: implant.cochlear@aaaht.scot.nhs.uk
