📱 💬 Screen Time & Speech Development

Screens are part of everyday family life — and that’s okay! It’s not realistic (or practical!) to avoid them altogether.

Here are some simple ways you can support your child’s speech and language development while watching screens together:
✨ Talk about what you see
✨ Pause and chat about the story
✨ Name characters, actions, and feelings
✨ Join in with songs and rhymes
✨ Make connections to real life (“Remember when we…?”)

🌟 Screen Balance Matters 🌟

Language isn’t just about words — it’s about connection.
Children’s brains build strong speech and communication skills through interaction: playing, singing, pointing, responding, and being responded to. 💬

✨ Boost real world learning by balancing screen time with:
👶 Face to face play
📚 Books and stories
🎶 Music and singing
🌳 Outdoor time

The more children connect with people — not screens — the stronger their brains grow. 💛
Let’s nurture communication, curiosity, and connection.

📱 Be Screen Smart
Young children learn best from real‑life connection — faces, voices, play, and shared moments.

Balancing screen use in the early years is important, and our own device habits matter too. When we’re present, children feel more secure, engaged, and ready to explore.

✨ Let’s make the early years count with presence, play, and connection.

📱 Screens Awareness Week 2026 starts today! 🌟

This week, we’re taking time to think about screens and “screen-time”.
Screens are a big part of everyday life — but too much screen use can have a real impact, especially on children. We’re increasingly seeing the effects of excessive screen time in the families and young people who use our services.

So this week, let’s all try to be a little more “savvy with our screens”!
Small changes can make a big difference.

✨ Join us as we share tips and ideas throughout the week!

There are lots of wonderful stories and rhymes we can share with our children. We often find ourselves returning to the same favourites, and over time these become familiar for everyone.

A simple idea to try at home: when you’re reading or singing a familiar rhyme, leave out the final word. For example: “Twinkle, twinkle, little…!” Pause for a moment and give your child the chance to complete it. This encourages them to join in and builds their confidence with language.

Our South Ayrshire Speech & Language Therapy team had a lovely time at the Marr College Careers Fair in January.

We really enjoyed chatting with so many curious and enthusiastic pupils, and it was a great chance to share what Speech and Language Therapists and Assistants do each day. We were delighted to be part of a great evening!

This week is Children's Mental Health Week.

Talking openly about our emotions is an important part of supporting children’s wellbeing. But for some children, expressing how they feel using words can be challenging.

To help with this, here is Jo showing us some Makaton signs that can be used to communicate different emotions.
