Today was a proud day! A few weeks ago I saw a lady for her regular foot health appointment. I always perform a few routine health checks before starting and the results left me with some concerns. The issues displayed were time-sensitive and so with the consent of my patient I immediately passed my concerns along the correct pathways. To cut a long story short she was leaving me this voicemail to let me know that she had been booked in for an operation to put in a couple of stents. I saw her again today and she greeted me with a big smile as she showed me the report which stated she had three blood clots stopping the flow of blood to her right leg. Without action she would have faced the possibility of gangrene and amputation or worse. I am over the moon that my service has allowed this patient to have her operation in time and improve her quality of life.

Sometimes it’s the simpler things that can give the most relief. This patient had spent most of the year in hospital. Due to this and a lack of mobility she had been unable to trim her nails and they’d become long and uncomfortable; catching on her socks and bed clothes and scratching whenever she moved. We trimmed and tidied before filing the nails and then applied some quality moisturising cream to her feet to make sure she was feeling free to relax without the worry of pain and discomfort. At Walk Easy Foot Health no day is the same, everybody’s feet are different and come with their own challenges and issues that can cause pain and discomfort. 6 weeks ago we visited a patient for the first time. This patient was born with a condition that affected the structure of their left foot and although they had been treated elsewhere in the past and was cared for morning and evening there were some clear issues when we sat down to inspect their feet prior to treatment. The shape of their foot meant that it was difficult for carers to keep the area beneath their toes clean and dry which had lead to large, sore open wounds as the skin became macerated which had become mildly infected. In cases like this we work with local GP practices to get our patients the help they need. The patient was prescribed antibiotics to clear the infection and allocated a district nurse who now sees them weekly to clean and redress the wound. The improvement in just 6 weeks has been fantastic. If you, a family member or somebody you know needs help looking after their feet don’t hesitate to get in touch. 🦶

Calluses are a defence mechanism that develop from repeated friction, rubbing or irritation on the skin. In this circumstance an elderly person has found that due to arthritis the joint of the 2nd toe has dropped, causing the skin below the joint to be irritated when putting weight on it to walk. Whilst a callus itself is unlikely to be painful, if left untreated it will continue to grow; in time it will become uncomfortable as it puts pressure on the skin beneath it and in some cases this will lead to the development of corns which can be very painful. At Walk Easy we are well versed in removing calluses and helping to offload the friction caused to help to prevent them occurring in future too.
