Another quote from a woman who wanted to be heard...

"There can be no 'one size fits all' approach to caring for women in labour. The midwives stuck to their fixed ideas about how long the labour would be and when I would need pain relief. All they needed to do was look at me and listen to me, as all the clues of how to care for me were there in what my body was doing and the things I was saying".

As a midwife I know my colleagues are 'up against it' and the shortage of staff is profound. However, this message was published online and represents a complex cognitive process from this and other women.

Case Study: Jane's Birth Plan Experience

"I was overcome with fear and anxiety about the birth of my second child and had a strong desire to have a clear birth plan right from the start. However, neither my midwife nor the consultant wanted to discuss birth options until the later stages of pregnancy 'because things could change'. What I needed from them was to be heard, have my worries acknowledged, to be given options and to form a plan.
