Real words from our community

We came together with Sam to explore how to support our NDV children with their big feelings.

Through sharing stories, getting creative and learning together, we created a space for connection, reflection and practical support that families can take home with them โœจ

It has been so lovely hearing how parents are already using these ideas in everyday life, from emotional regulation to bedtime routines.

We meet regularly at our Kingsbridge Hub ๐Ÿ’›
๐ŸŒฟ Check out our website for upcoming dates โ€” all are welcome

โœจ Weโ€™ll also be running Building Emotional Resiliency sessions with Sam very soon, so keep an eye out for dates

A huge thank you to Sam for leading such a thoughtful session, and to Jenna Travis Photography for capturing these wonderful moments for our community ๐Ÿ’›

When eating feels overwhelming, itโ€™s not always โ€œfussy eatingโ€

For many children with sensory processing differences, food can bring anxiety, discomfort and stress.

From textures and smells to noise, movement and social expectations, mealtimes can feel incredibly overwhelming.

Understanding the sensory side of eating challenges is often the first step towards finding the right support.

๐Ÿ“š This week, weโ€™re highlighting a valuable Lending Library resource:
The Autistic Teenโ€™s Avoidant Eating Workbook by Dr Elizabeth Shea

A practical and supportive guide for families navigating food-related challenges and avoidant eating.

Our Lending Library is open during our Friday sessions, where you can explore books, tools and sensory resources to support your child at home ๐Ÿ’›

๐Ÿ’› A huge thank you to Sam for such a wonderful session at Kingsbridge Hub

We had such a lovely time creating emotion monsters together, exploring creativity and opening up meaningful conversations around resilience and emotional wellbeing.

Sessions like these are a beautiful reminder of how important it is to create safe, supportive spaces where children and families can feel heard, understood and free to express themselves.

Thank you to Sam for bringing this experience to our community, and to everyone who came along and took part ๐Ÿ’›

We hope to welcome you back again soon โœจ

๐Ÿ’› Understanding the rise in school absences: supporting our sensory-sensitive children together

A recent BBC report highlights a concerning rise in school absences, with a record number of pupils missing more than half of their school days.

For many children with sensory needs, school environments can be overwhelming:
โ€ข loud noise
โ€ข bright lights
โ€ข busy transitions
โ€ข clothing discomfort
โ€ข social anxiety

This is why understanding the root causes matters.

Rather than focusing only on attendance figures, we need to ask:
What is making school feel unsafe or unmanageable for our children?

Together, through sensory-aware classrooms and compassionate conversations, we can help children feel safe enough to learn and thrive ๐Ÿ’›

๐Ÿ’› Understanding the real challenges: SEND support in schools

A recent survey reported by The Independent found that parents believe the lack of SEND support is the biggest issue affecting schools today.

For our neurodivergent children, this matters deeply.

Better SEND support means:
โ€ข sensory-aware classrooms
โ€ข personalised learning plans
โ€ข trained teachers and support staff
โ€ข early recognition of sensory and additional needs

Every child deserves an environment where they feel understood, supported and able to thrive.

If youโ€™re currently navigating this, please know you are not alone. We continue to advocate for stronger, more inclusive support for children and families across our community ๐Ÿ’›

๐Ÿ’› Supporting our SEND community

A recent survey reported by The Guardian found that parents of SEND pupils without an EHCP are among the least satisfied with their childrenโ€™s schools.

Without an EHCP, many childrenโ€™s sensory and additional needs are not properly recognised or supported, which can lead to growing anxiety, frustration and sometimes even school refusal.

If this sounds familiar, please know that you are not alone.

At The Fidget Project, we currently offer in-person support sessions every Tuesday and Friday during term time, providing a safe and understanding space for parents, carers and families.

Weโ€™ll also soon be launching additional online support through our new website, and weโ€™ll share updates as soon as itโ€™s ready ๐Ÿ’›

๐Ÿ’› Important news for families and educators supporting children with SEND and sensory needs

Councils across England are now required to outline their SEND plans to access a share of an ยฃ860 million funding pot, aimed at improving support for children with additional needs and creating more inclusive school environments.

This is positive news and a welcome step forward.

At the same time, many of us in small rural communities know the reality can feel very different. Budgets are tight, schools are stretched, and many settings are already losing Teaching Assistants and Learning Support Assistants.

So while this funding offers hope, the real question is: how will this reach our hard-to-access rural schools and the families who need it most?

At The Fidget Project, weโ€™re continuing to support families directly by building a Directory of Sensory-Aware Practitioners, helping parents and carers access support more quickly and more easily.

Weโ€™ll be sharing more once our new website launches ๐Ÿ’›

Letโ€™s keep advocating together for meaningful, accessible SEND support for every child.

๐Ÿ’› Real stories from the Gentle Disco

For many children, school discos can feel overwhelming. The noise, the crowds, the unpredictability.

But when we create the right environment, everything changes.

Children who had never attended before were able to come along, stay, play, and connect.
Children who felt anxious were able to feel safe.
Children who often feel excluded were able to feel included.

These moments are exactly why this work is so important ๐Ÿ’ซ
