Well worth a read, whether you have ADHD, or love someone with ADHD. I've shared to offer explanation of RSD, not to make others feel uncomfortable. π€
Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) is considered a trauma response, often stemming from repeated childhood criticism or rejection in individuals with ADHD, leading to an intensely painful reaction to perceived social threats, functioning similarly to fight/flight/freeze responses seen in PTSD. While not an official diagnosis, RSD is a recognized experience where the brain's emotional regulation fails, interpreting minor slights as severe rejection, causing shame, anger, or withdrawal as a protective, albeit dysregulated, reaction.
How it connects to trauma
Conditioned response: RSD develops as a learned reaction to past experiences of rejection or judgment, making the nervous system hyper-vigilant for future threats.
Fight/Flight/Fawn/Freeze: The extreme emotional pain and impulsive reactions (anger, avoidance, people-pleasing) mirror the body's trauma responses.
Childhood experiences: Individuals with ADHD often face higher rates of childhood trauma, and the repeated criticism can create a foundation for RSD, making them feel "broken" or "defective".
What it feels like
Intense pain: Criticism feels like a physical injury or burning sensation, not just normal hurt feelings.
Shame and inadequacy: A deep sense of shame and worthlessness, often with the belief of being a burden or failure.
Rapid mood shifts: Sudden, overwhelming sadness, anger, or panic triggered by perceived disapproval.
Manifestations of RSD
Internal: Anxiety, spiraling thoughts, intense self-criticism, or panic.
External: Explosive anger, outbursts, defiance, or extreme people-pleasing to avoid rejection.
