Lived experience traumatic brain injury survivor. I'm a person-centred counsellor in Hull East Yorkshire who offers a friendly and safe space to explore difficulties and concerns in a relational and holistic way. I am fully qualified, insured, DBS checked and a member of a professional organisation the ISPC. Past and present experiences can affect daily life and I offer understanding and insight that is supportive and caring which helps with growth and change. I have broad experience, both lived and professional, which has enabled me to develop the skills and knowledge to work with clients sensitively around the challenges they face. Having lived through traumatic events myself, and worked extensively with trauma survivors, I've come to realise it requires genuineness and compassion to heal in the recovery process.

As we look towards the start of a new year it can be tradition to set goals but sometimes this can feel overwhelming and unachievable. An alternative can be to think about beginning it with intention but also take time to reflect on the last 12 months. What have you accomplished? What are you grateful for? What have you learnt? And if you have a dream follow it. Art by The Glittering Fox

Today marks the winter solstice and the longest night of the year and as we welcome the increasing daylight hours reflect on this past year and set intentions for the next. Light a candle and sit in quiet contemplation. Spend time in nature and practice gratitude.

Counselling for brain injury. How can it help?
Living with brain injury presents with lots of challenges and is life changing and the approach I use can help with a number of things such as: acceptance, understanding, goal setting, coping strategies, self compassion, grief and loss, resilience, regulation and self worth. The list isn't exhaustive and represents a little insight into the work that I do.

We live in a world of digital media, messages, texts and e-mails which of course is fast and efficient (when it works!) but oftentimes what's missing is human connection. Hearing a voice at the end of the phone, a hand written letter or seeing someone in person really helps to feel more connected to the individual you're communicating with sharing your humanness.

Lack of insight can ocurr after brain injury and impacts a person's awareness of their cognitive, psychological and behavioural changes post injury. This can prove challenging as the individual doesn't realise how their inappropriate behaviour can be dangerous as they are unable to recognise potential consequences. With the right support strategies and techniques can be learnt to help manage it.

Rest is a vital part of daily life particularly after brain injury and requires periods of allowing the brain to switch off. Overstimulation is common in brain injury survivors so strategic breaks help to overcome this such as listening to instrumental music or nature sounds, watching birds in the garden and practicing mindfulness.

As a relational counsellor one of the most important aspects of my work is the therapeutic relationship between myself and the client as this is where healing and growth ocurrs. Through being actively engaged and supportive it helps to develop greater emotional well-being and understanding of healthier ways to interact.

It was great to be part of the Humber & North Yorkshire ABI Network conference yesterday and we all had a brilliant day. Listening to all the fab speakers the main takeaway was that brain injury rehabilitation is a lifelong journey and what we want as brain injury survivors is to be truly listened to and for our experiences to be validated.

Neuro fatigue features heavily in the daily lives of brain injury survivors and it is in a league all of it's own. It is beyond tired where everything is just too exhausting and your brain just can't cope with doing anything else. Speech can get slurred, nerves can feel frazzled, basic functioning becomes non-existent and it is completely debilitating and incapacitating. Simple tasks can become too much to cope with and then overwhelm can ocurr. Forward planning, strategic rest breaks and being mindful of how much you try to fit into your day may help to alleviate some of the overwhelming tiredness.

Emotional dysregulation can be quite common after brain injury as the brains ability to adjust accordingly is compromised. Feelings of stress and anxiety can be heightened and depression and apathy may also occurr. Identifying triggers, taking rest breaks and using strategies and coping skills can help to manage the changes
