Breastfeeding and multi-tasking! We love this photo of a mother cooking at the same time as breastfeeding her toddler. (Note the time on the clock.. a familiar time when toddlers need the most attention!)

Why not share in the comments what you've done and achieved at the same time as breastfeeding!

October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month. Thank you to Sophie for sharing her story of breastfeeding Olive on our website.

"One thing I was told by my consultant and midwife was that babies with Down syndrome and her heart condition often struggle to breastfeed, often down to low muscle tone and breathlessness, but I was never discouraged to try and was told I would have all the support needed."

If you are expecting a baby and are continuing to breastfeed your older child, many questions may be going through your mind. Mothers can breastfeed while pregnant; some go on to nurse both their new baby and their older child after the birth. This is known as 'tandem nursing'.

Shelby tells her how finding her local LLL group helped her to grow in confidence after difficult early weeks with her baby:

“My partner heard about LLL group meetings and he encouraged me to go. I was an incredibly anxious first time mum who hadn't really left the house on my own with my baby and the thought filled me with dread. On the morning of the group I had an urge to get out of the house so I whisked my baby (still in his pyjamas!) and off we went.

I wholeheartedly believe that meeting was the turning point, not only in our breastfeeding journey but in my journey as a mother. I immediately felt welcomed and at ease, and came away feeling empowered, strong and validated.

I recently attended my second meeting and can't believe this massive difference I see in myself as not only a mother, but a breastfeeding one! I am already excited to attend our next meeting and will shout to all the future mama's I know to find an LLL meeting and make sure they go!”

Most new parents, unless they have been around newborn babies a lot before, are surprised and sometimes confused by how intensely their baby needs to be held and comforted. At times, it can feel like very hard work, or even as if, whatever you try, nothing quite works.

Our article about the newborn days may help you make sense of your baby’s behaviour and work out whether there is a problem that needs fixing, or whether your baby is just doing what normal babies do.

What does your toddler love about breastfeeding? How do they show you that breastfeeding is important to them?
