Simons Ceremonies

Simons Ceremonies I am an independent who is passionate about uniquely creating bespoke ceremoies because no two people are the same.

Whatever the occasion the crafting of each ceremony starts in the same way, with a blank piece of paper and a conversation over a cuppa. Over the last twenty years I've had numerous different jobs, although these can be categorised into two areas, sales and ministry. After a successful career managing electrical retailers and then in estate agency, I made a big change in 2010 and trained as a Baptist Minister. During my time in ministry I have gained a Degree in Theology and ministered in three different churches. Each of these has had its own unique challenges and joys which has helped me develop and hone my skills as an effective listener and communicator. During my ministry I have led hundreds of Sunday Services, married couples who are in love, led funerals for family, close friends and those for whom I have cared deeply for, led dedication services, vow renewals and memorial services. All of this has been done while seeking to offer support, kindness, guidance and compassion to those involved. I have to say that I never saw myself leaving ministry but several life events, including the passing of a family member gave the impetuous for a change in direction. I believe that the experiences I have gained have given me the skills to walk alongside people in both the happiest, and most difficult times of their lives and is something I am wholeheartedly committed to doing. The thing that centres my life, aside from my own faith as a Christian, is my family and friends. I am married to Melissa, and between us we have six children which keeps us on our toes, I wouldn't have it any other way though. I am happiest when I am outside, this might be lighting the BBQ in the summer to enjoy time with family and friends, walking in the Peak District, scaling Snowdon in the rain or camping and kayaking with friends.

****EVENT CANCELLED DUE TO UNFORSEEN CIRCUMSTANCES****
If you were planning your funeral today, what choices would you make?

It's a question many of us put off, but one I have been reflecting a little about in my most recent blog. In it, I share some thoughts about the choices we have and give some background to the funeral workshop, 'Yours to Decide', which I will be leading at Lelley Fields Crematorium on Wednesday 10th September at 10.30am.

Together we'll explore some of the choices we have and create space for honest conversations, and of course, enjoy some cake and refreshments as we talk.

Choices, we make them every day, don't we? We wake up in the morning and choose what we're going to eat for breakfast. We choose what we're going to wear and what we're going to do (especially if it is our day off). Choices are part of daily life, and more often than not, we don't think about them, w...

I'm excited announce that I'll be leading 'Yours To Decide', a workshop that I have produced, at Lelley Fields Crematorium on Wednesday 10th September from 10.30am - 12.00pm.

Talking about death is never easy, and because of that we often put off having difficult conversations about funerals with those we care about most.

This workshop will offer a safe and supportive space to have honest conversations about the various choices available when planning a funeral. We'll also challenge some common myths and leave time for you to ask any questions you may have.

I'm so pleased that Lelley Fields Crematorium is opening its doors to host this workshop, a real sign of their commitment to helping to facilitate transparency within the funeral industry, and to encouraging these important conversations.

Refreshments, and of course, homemade cake, will be provided on the the day.

Losing a loved one is never easy, and navigating grief can often feel overwhelming.
In the midst of it all, Bereavement Cafés offer a gentle space to be with others who understand the journey you're on and can provide empathetic support.

If you’re struggling, consider reaching out and connecting with others or perhaps seek out a Bereavement Café near to you.

Over the coming days, I’ll be highlighting a few local options that may be of interest.

Lelley Fields is a beautiful Crematorium and their open day on the 19th July (9.30am -1.30pm) is a unique opportunity to see behind the scenes.

I'll be there along with others who work in the industry and will be able to answer any questions you might have about funerals themselves, or the services they offer at the Crematorium.

There will be tea and cake on offer, so if you are planning ahead, or want to learn more, why not pop along and say hello on the day.

🌿 This Week in My Work as a Celebrant 🌿

This week has been filled with three main things: Listening, Processing, and Writing.

👂 Listening to families as they share heartfelt stories and treasured memories of their loved ones.
🧠 Processing all I’ve heard as I consider the laughter, the tears, and the small but meaningful details.
✍️ Writing a life story with care, honouring each person’s journey, their passions, their quirks, and crafting a truly personal farewell.

No two weeks are ever the same. Every visit, every story, every goodbye is completely unique, just like the people we honour. And every time, I’m reminded what a privilege it is to help tell someone’s story with the love and respect they deserve.

I’ve also got a few exciting things in the pipeline that I'll be sharing with you soon…

Reflecting on the last week it was a privilege to lead the Father's Day Service at Haltemprice Crematorium on Sunday, giving those who attended an opportunity to pause and remember someone special in their lives.
There have been moments sat with families listening to the story of their loved ones life, and then armed with a cuppa and a biscuit afterwards at home, trying to find the words to help them process their grief as I prepare each service from scratch.
While there have been tears at services we have honoured each individuals life in a way that honours them, for one lady, her smile, even when struggling lit up the room.
It's never easy, each story is personal, and I count it a blessing to journey with families during such a difficult time.

Here are some of my recent thoughts on funeral planning:
Remember, it's never to early to start to make plans and write down your wishes, so why not make some time to talk to those you love about this sooner rather than later.

We are all different, aren't we? Our personal preferences can differ dramatically from those we love and care about. Take driving, for instance. When I'm travelling with my wife, we have fairly similar tastes in music, so there are no big arguments or debates about what we listen to. More often than...

Saying goodbye to someone you love is never easy.

As I make final preparations for this week’s services, I’m once again reminded of the many unique and meaningful stories shared by families. Each one is important, each one special.

None of us knows what the future holds, so don't put off till tomorrow what you can do today. Embrace new adventures. Follow your dreams. Treasure your time and the people around you.

Father's Day can be a difficult day for all sorts of reasons. If you would like time and space to reflect in a space where it is ok to not be ok, we will be holding a service at Haltemprice Crematorium on Sunday 15th June at 10.30am.
Please contact me directly if you would like any further information.
