The original AIDS Memorial Quilt was conceived in the US in 1985 by activist Cleve Jones, and continues to serve as a powerful memorial to those who have died from AIDS-related causes, symbolising the impact of the epidemic on the LGBTQ+ community and beyond.

The concept of the AIDS quilts spread around the world and you will find many different and beautiful examples.

We last made a quilt in 2005, 20 years after the original quilt, and with another 20 years having passed it seems fitting to create a new one, to raise awareness, end the stigma and share the love of the amazing community who have both been affected by and supported those with HIV and AIDS.

Cornerhouse first started life as the community group AIDS Action, becoming formally registered as a charity in 1988, while our work looks a lot different today, our values, ethos and pride come from our foundations in AIDS Action.

Let’s stitch together hope, remembrance & unity.

Together in partnership with The Warren Youth Project we run the FLIPSIDE project:

‘Young people need more than worksheets, they need trusted adults in safe places’ - flipside worker

Flipside is focused on early intervention and trauma-informed support.
Whether it’s 1:1 support, active therapy, or helping young people explore hobbies and education, our team is there to break cycles and build futures.

Flipside supports young people at risk of exploitation or criminal activity, young people are supported to understand their emotional regulation needs to enable them to respond not react (not an easy task for anyone!)

We meet young people where they’re at – emotionally, physically, and socially.

All flipside young people can access all services from both organisations in addition to the support offered by the FLIPSIDE Project

Supporting LGBTQIA+ young people is part of our DNA.

Cornerhouse began 40 years ago as AIDS Action, and that legacy of inclusion and advocacy continues today.

We’re proud to be celebrating 4 years of our dedicated LGBTQ+ youth support worker, Leah, who offers 1:1 support in schools and communities for LGBTQIA+ young people who might want someone to talk to, explore identity, or get support navigating life.

Since 2018, we’ve also been running Step Out with , our weekly LGBTQ+ youth group—a space where young people can be unapologetically themselves. A lot has changed since we opened those doors, but the young people continue to inspire us and keep us coming back every week.

Last week we hosted our annual Halloween Pride Prom with bringing LGBTQ+ young people from across the city to the arena and had a fantastic time 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Proud to be part of a growing network of spaces with Bleed Kits! While we hope nobody ever has to use our kit, knowing where one is can save crucial minutes in an emergency situation! ❤️

The ReachOut Project team is on the streets of Hull come rain or shine, delivering over 1900 hours youth work throughout the year.

Cornerhouse has delivered street based outreach for over 35 years, in one form or another, having always recognised that the best work is done where people feel safe, and for some young people that is on their own patch, on their own streets and estates, and in their own parks.

Connecting with young people in their own environments, offering support, advice, and a listening ear.  The team’s role is very much about making young people’s own spaces a safe place to support them, responding both to the young people and community needs, and project coordinator, Jo, takes information from partners across the city to plan shifts to meets these needs.

The team are able to build trusted relationships with young people, by being there week after week, becoming part of the young peoples routines to have a check in, 99 times out of 100 they might just say "fine thanks”, but that 1 time they need something more, they will know who they can turn to.

Sometimes the most powerful work happens in the quiet moments on the street.

This we’re celebrating the heart of Cornerhouse – a trauma-informed, inclusive space where young people feel heard, supported, and empowered.

From health and wellbeing to identity and relationships, our team walks alongside young people every step of the way.

We provide access to fun activities, social opportunities and a chance for young people to explore their identity and values.

We're proud of all the young people we work with and excited about providing them with the support they need to work towards their brighter future.

This Youth Work Week we’re shining a light on each of our projects and how they are out there being a voice for young people in the city every day ✨
