The word Rei is often loosely translated as Universal Life Energy. However, the Japanese character for Rei is more intrinsically defined as Spirit, Sacred or Divine. Ki, is the Japanese word for the life energy that composes, permeates and moves through everything in existence. Reiki (pronounced Ray – Key) is the Japanese name given to a most ancient form of natural hands-on healing which was re- discovered by Dr. Mikao Usui – a Japanese Buddhist – in the early 20th Century. The practice of Reiki is thought to be thousands of years old, with evidence that a form of Reiki was being used at least 4000 years ago by Tibetan Buddhist monks. In modern times, Reiki is used to describe many types of healing and spiritual work and not just the system of healing based on Dr. Usui’s method: this method is called the Usui System of Reiki Healing, Usui Shiki Ryoho. During a Reiki treatment, the practitioner allows Reiki energy to flow into their own energy system via the Crown Chakra, before passing it on to the client via the Hand Chakras.
