Improved testing for human papillomavirus (HPV) has allowed the NHS, based on major clinical evidence, to safely extend the screening interval for those that test negative for the virus from three years to five years. The evidence shows that younger women (aged 25 to 49) who test negative for HPV are at very low risk of cervical cancer over the next 10 years.

Patients whose samples test positive for the presence of HPV, or who have a recent history of HPV, will continue to be invited to more frequent screenings to check if the virus has cleared and, if not, if any cell changes have developed.

There is no change to women aged 50 to 64, who are already invited every 5-years.
