BOAT POSE

This easy pose helps build physical strength, mental focus and stability from the inside out. It is a seated balance where you support your body on your sitting bones lifting your legs and torso to create a ‘’V’’ shape resembling a boat. Holding your body in a ‘’V’’ shape will challenge your balance and teach you to make micro adjustments to stay upright. These minor adjustments are important. In the words of Jon Kabat-Zinn ‘the little things? The little moments? They aren’t little.’

A strong core is the foundation of good posture, and this pose by strengthening the abdominal wall and back muscles will help you to stand and sit taller. Hopefully it will reduce our tendency to slouch, which may happen over the festive season, in crowded rooms at party time...

Boat is a prime example of how Yoga poses involve the body and mind for a comprehensive sense of well-being. The importance of good posture is stressed by all Yoga teachers and is fundamental to our practice. Bad posture will come home to roost later in life so it is something to work on now. Boat pose is an easy way to try and avert posture problems as it strengthens the core, improves balance and stability, stimulates abdominal organs, strengthens the hip flexors and spine and builds mental focus. Quite a package from a simple Yoga pose.

A quiet pause before the year turns…

We’re gathering for a peaceful hour to honour the Winter Solstice, Saturday 20th December at 4.30pm - 5.30pm — a time to slow down, soften, and gently reflect on what we’re ready to release before the new year arrives.

We’re delighted to welcome back Laura Penneycard (), who will guide us through:

🧡grounding meditation.🧡simple breath practice.🧡journaling prompts to take away.🧡a touch of one-to-one care with essential oils & energy work.🧡and a long, soothing sound journey for deep rest and restoration.

Laura works intuitively with Himalayan singing bowls, gongs, percussive instruments and her voice, creating a sonic space to settle the nervous system and reconnect with your inner landscape.

At this busy time of year, these pockets of stillness matter. A chance to meet yourself gently, release what no longer serves you.

There are still a couple of spaces, so don’t delay booking via Glofox (under the Courses tab) or on our website: https://www.stableyoga.co.uk/online-booking (click Courses here too).

We look forward to welcoming you for this rewarding event.🧡

Is your diary getting overstuffed?
Are you already chasing your tail preparing for the festive season?
Do you feel your stress levels rising when you look at your To Do list?

All of us benefit from periods of calm - ideally every day - to rest; to contemplate; to step off the hamster wheel of life and to be still for a while. And many of us need to "grow a 'no'". Consider whether it's an overactive sense of duty or a tendency to people-please that makes us say 'yes' to every request or invitation?

Time is precious, so we need to think about our priorities - what's really important to us and what do we need (and secretly long) to let go? As Thich Nhat Hanh says, we are never wasting time when we're apparently doing 'nothing' - it is key to our health and wellbeing, giving us time to think, to heal, to check in with ourselves, and to appreciate life at a slower pace.

If doing your yoga practice is one of your priorities, with 10 classes at Stable Yoga to choose from each week you can always schedule that vital me-time.

There will be lots of sessions over the Christmas break (check the calendar), or join us at one of our one-off Courses/workshops:
Yoga & Wreath-making afternoon on Sunday 30th November,
Vinyasa Flow & Longer Meditation on the morning of Sunday 14th December,
Winter Solstice Sound Healing evening on Saturday 20th December, or Soulful Saturday workshop on Saturday 31st January.

Click 'Courses' here: https://www.stableyoga.co.uk/online-booking or in the Glofox app (search first for Stable Yoga). Or click the link in bio...

We look forward to seeing you for some me-time!

A TIME FOR LETTING GO

There is a Zen proverb: ‘Let go or be dragged’. This sounds a bit harsh, so the words of Deepak Chopra may be a more pleasant reflection: ‘In the process of letting go, you will lose many things from the past, but you will find yourself’.

The themes of a Yoga class and the intentions we may set for that class are often in step with the seasons or the time of year or with Nature. Fireworks day is probably not so appropriate, but Remembrance Sunday is more so, and with Nature the shedding of leaves provides a good yogic metaphorical lesson for us all.

Aside from ‘shedding’, Autumn is also a time to gather, to store, to plant, to adjust and to make good use of any abundance. It is a good time to set our own intentions in our Yoga classes and to get in step with Nature by acting accordingly. Yoga encourages us to let go and breathe. Letting go of those things that no longer serve us is a good lesson to take from Nature, especially in the Autumn months when we can witness and appreciate how holding on drains energy. Trees teach us that letting go is not a sign of weakness but a natural and necessary part of growth and reminds us that all states, even the most beautiful, are temporary.

For Yogis this is a good season which encourages us to ‘shed some leaves’, adjust and appreciate what we have. Autumn reminds us that the process of change continues to be the fundamental law of nature and life.

So, a good time for Yoga – either to start, to resume, or to continue.
Stable Yoga offers a wide range of classes at a variety of times with a variety of teachers and styles. So, if one doesn’t suit you the chances are that one of the others will. Try it and see.

YOGA : ON A MONDAY – IN CLASS OR ON LINE

Monday has always been a notoriously difficult day. Most of us have to shift from Sunday’s relaxation to Monday’s demands. The weekend has a hangover, and it is called Monday. For some of us a sense of dread and anxiety can even creep in on a Sunday afternoon. This can often be traced back to schooldays, but it can endure long after these are over. The ‘I will do it next week’ is suddenly upon us and it is back to Monday again. It is universally known as the worst day of the week, with jokes and songs like ‘Manic Monday’ and ‘I don’t like Mondays’ reinforcing this notion. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

So, what to do? The answer is to schedule in some Yoga! Stable Yoga has a class at the very sociable time of 9.15am on a Monday and, if you are unable to attend in person, the practice is also live-streamed on Zoom. So, why not treat yourself, book in and enjoy the peace and rejuvenation of a Yoga practice. This class is usually recorded too, so contact info@stableyoga.co.uk and ask Lucy for the YouTube link if you would like to do the class later in the day/week?

It is said that Yoga can put a spring in your step and this may be just what you need to turn the day around and banish the Monday blues.

In addition to Mondays and the usual wide selection of classes at Stable Yoga, there is a special, one-off, 90 minute Vinyasa and Meditation class on Sunday 2nd November starting at 10.00am (2 class credits for regular weekly students and £25 for drop-ins). To view and book classes (and any upcoming courses) please visit the Stable Yoga website at https://www.stableyoga.co.uk or download the free Glofox app and search for Stable Yoga.

Just a few spaces left this Saturday to come and enjoy a nourishing evening, setting the tone for the week ahead. It will be a space to slow down, and reconnect with your inner rhythm.

Join the group for a deeply nurturing afternoon of gentle yoga, breath, yoga nidra, and soothing sound healing. We begin with grounding breathwork and soulful movement to ease tension and calm the nervous system.

Then, sink into yoga nidra, the ancient practice of yogic sleep. Known to soothe the stress response and support deep restoration, this practice creates a bridge between wakefulness and rest. You’ll be gently guided by Niki, Hatha yoga teacher and Being Breathed somatic breathwork facilitator.

We’ll then journey into sound with Mia, who intuitively layers gongs, Himalayan bowls, and her crystal harp into a healing soundscape. The vibration of sound works gently on the nervous system — easing tension, balancing energy, and inviting a sense of spacious clarity.

Book now by choosing courses here: https://www.stableyoga.co.uk/online-booking, or on the Glofox App.

"Autumn is beautiful reminder that I can let go of things that no longer benefit me, that weigh me down and keep me from living my fullest." Anon.

The cooler weather reunites us with our favourite woolly jumpers and cosy slippers. It is a time for self-care and introspection: snuggling on the sofa with a book; cooking & storing food for the winter - especially with this year's incredible fruit crop; starting a creative project to keep us occupied during the longer evenings; crunching through the fallen leaves as the sun dips lower in the sky. Let us know your favourite autumn activity in the comments below...

Yes, since the equinox the days are becoming shorter, but what a joy to have the evening sun pouring through the studio door and into our evening sessions!

There's still some spaces left in our 'Soulful Saturday' workshop: yoga, relaxation and sound healing from 6.30-8.30pm on 18th October with Niki and Mia. 🧡 Go to https://www.stableyoga.co.uk/online-booking and click Courses to book.

Relax and BREATHE

Staying with the theme of last week’s post,
The often-quoted Indian Yoga teacher, BKS Iyengar wrote that a yogi’s life is not measured by the number of his/her days, but the number of his/her breaths. He had spent years in bed as a sickly child until he learnt yoga and ‘breathed’ himself back to health. He died in 2014 aged 95.

In Yoga we are encouraged to breathe through our nose. The benefits of nasal breathing are supported by ancient wisdom and modern science. Our noses act as a sophisticated air filtration system to protect our lungs. Slow, controlled nasal breathing stimulates the vagus nerve which is the main nerve of the parasympathetic nervous system. This promotes a state of calm, relaxation and recovery. It lowers the heart rate and blood pressure and helps us to have a focused and meditative yoga practice.

In Yoga philosophy breath is not just air, it is Prana (life force energy). James Nestor wrote a fascinating and well researched book called ‘BREATH’ which supports the benefits of nasal breathing and is well worth reading on an autumn evening. He writes ‘we assume, at our peril, that breathing is a passive action, just something we do: breathe, live; stop breathing, die’. It is a complex subject and is a fundamental aspect of our yoga practice. Our movement is synchronised with our breath. We Inhale to expand, lengthen and open our bodies and Exhale to fold or twist, release and let go. And, since the breath is always happening in the present moment by focusing on the sensation of our breathing, we can remain anchored and present.

This is a rather massive subject for a few paragraphs so best to come to Yoga and experience the benefits of mindful breathing and to learn more breathing techniques that may help improve your health and wellbeing.

Focus on the exhalation

Often in yoga, we bring our attention to the inhalation; drawing energy in, lifting and expanding as we move. But the exhalation deserves equal attention. In moments of fire — when the body is working hard or the mind is tempted to resist — directing focus to the out-breath changes the dynamic.

Modern science now affirms what yogis have practiced for centuries: a longer, steadier breath out activates the parasympathetic nervous system, your body’s natural “rest and restore” mode. Each one is like a signal to say you can soften.

The breathing practice Visama Vritti Pranayama — “unequal ratio breath” — where the exhalation is intentionally longer than the inhalation.
On the mat, this helps us breathe through the burn, find steadiness in challenge, and soften resistance. Off the mat, it’s the same practice that helps us meet stress and discomfort with calm presence rather than tension.

Try this simple Visama Vritti practice:
* Inhale gently through the nose for 4 counts
* Exhale slowly through the nose for 6 counts
* Repeat for 1–2 minutes

A date for your diary!

Following their very popular 'Soulful Sunday' in May, Niki and Mia will be back at Stable Yoga on Saturday 18th October from 6.30-8.30pm for a blissful & restful collaboration of gentle yoga inspired movement & breath, yoga Nidra (the deep, ancient practice of yogic sleep) & soothing Sound Healing.

Starting with settling and grounding breathing practices followed by gentle soulful yoga stretches, relaxing poses and a deeply restorative yoga nidra. You are guided by Niki, a Hatha yoga teacher & Being Breathed somatic breath work facilitator as she creates a safe, held and loving space for your body & mind to rest.
