Resomation (Water Cremation) – What You Need to Know
You may have seen recent news about resomation, also known as alkaline hydrolysis or water cremation, being described as the biggest change to funerals in over 100 years.
The Scottish Government has now approved regulations that will allow hydrolysis to become a third option alongside burial and cremation in Scotland.
Hydrolysis uses warm water and an alkaline solution to gently accelerate the natural process of decomposition. Like cremation, it leaves behind ashes that families can keep, scatter or bury. It’s often considered a more environmentally friendly alternative.
However, it’s important to clarify:
Although the process has been approved, there are currently no facilities or specialist equipment in place anywhere in Scotland to carry it out.
It will take time to secure planning permission, install the specialist equipment and construct a suitable facility. This means resomation is not yet available and may still be some time away.
We’ll continue to keep families informed as developments progress.
If you would like to speak to us about current funeral options or planning ahead, our team is always here to help.

What to Write on a Sympathy Card or Funeral Flowers 💐

Finding the right words at a time of loss can feel incredibly difficult. Many people worry about saying the “wrong” thing — but the truth is, simple and heartfelt messages mean the most.
If you’re unsure where to start, here are a few gentle ideas:
• “With deepest sympathy and loving thoughts.”
• “Thinking of you and your family at this sad time.”
• “Forever in our hearts.”
• “Rest in peace.”
• “Sending love, strength and comfort.”
You don’t need to write a lot. A short message, written with sincerity, is more than enough to show you care.
If you’re ever unsure, remember — kindness, love and support always speak louder than perfect words.

For centuries, people in Britain have marked graves as a way to remember and honour those they love.
Stonehenge is one of our most famous ancient sites and was used as an early burial place thousands of years ago.
Before the 19th century, graves were often marked with simple stones or wooden crosses. But during the Victorian era (1837–1901), carved and engraved headstones became much more common. Families began adding inscriptions, Bible verses, personal messages and decorative symbols — creating lasting tributes that told the story of a life.
It’s a tradition that continues today, with many families choosing bespoke headstones with beautiful carvings to honour someone special.

Tell Us Once – a free service to help after a death 🤍

When someone dies, there can be a lot of practical matters to deal with. Tell Us Once is a free service from mygov.scot that helps make things a little easier.

It allows you to report a death to several government departments in one go, including Social Security Scotland, HMRC, DWP, DVLA, the Passport Office, and your local council.

When you register the death, the registrar will explain how to use Tell Us Once. Many families find it helpful as it saves time and avoids having to contact each organisation separately during a difficult period.

👉 Please see the images below for a simple overview of how the service works.

Once the death has been registered, we’re here for you. Whether you’d like us to take care of the funeral arrangements or simply need guidance and reassurance, our friendly funeral directors are here to support you every step of the way, day or night.
