Hi everyone, I’d really appreciate your thoughts on something I’ve been grappling with.

Where do you think childhood apraxia of speech, ASD, and cognitive impairment overlap and where do they clearly differ?

I keep coming back to this because communication difficulties can look very similar on the surface, but the underlying reasons can be completely different. For example, is it a motor planning issue (apraxia), a difference in social communication (ASD), or a broader cognitive challenge or a mix of these?

It is hard to separate what’s driving what, especially when expressive speech is limited.

I run a private clinic Lancashire Speech Therapy. Most of the time it is either at capacity or just over. While it’s fantastic to give clients the therapy and time that they need it can be frustrating to see how poorly funded vital speech and language therapy services are. As a society, we must prioritise speech and language therapy. It is not an optional extra.
