Can’t Puff Your Cheeks? It Might Be Oral Apraxia!
Ever tried puffing your cheeks or blowing a kiss and found it a little bit tricky? That could be a sign of oral apraxia! It’s a lesser-known motor planning difficulty where your brain struggles to coordinate movements in your lips, cheeks, or jaw. The muscles work just fine; it’s the message that’s getting muddled. This can affect speech, facial expressions, or even simple actions like sticking out your tongue. Everyone thinks oral or verbal apraxia is just speech when actually speech is one thing that could be unaffected. Speechapraxia.co.uk

Today is International Day of Women and Girls in Science - why Speech & Language Therapists are clinical scientists

Speech & Language Therapy is not just a caring profession; it is a science based clinical discipline.

Speech & Language Therapists are trained in:
• neuroscience and linguistics
• developmental psychology
• anatomy & physiology
• research methods and clinical science

Our decisions are hypothesis-driven, evidence-led and clinically reasoned, with direct impact on communication outcomes.

Communication may be human, but our work is grounded in science.

Today we celebrate the women driving clinical excellence, research and evidence-based practice in Speech & Language Therapy. To quote Sarah Lyon’s from LondonSpeech Therapy

Who Should Be Prioritised for Genetic Testing in Childhood Motor Speech Disorders?~30% genetic diagnostic yield, similar to epilepsy & CP. Children with delayed walking, motor + receptive language difficulties, dysmorphism, or CAS + dysarthria should be prioritised for genomic testing.

A major new open-access study, Childhood motor speech disorders: who to prioritise for genetic testing (Van Niel et al., 2026), provides the clearest clinical guidance to date on when genetic testing should be considere...

In the early days of starting Speech Apraxia UK, it felt daunting to think I was doing it all on my own. It is now a large organisation, with thousands of people connected to it, but at the beginning that scale felt overwhelming.

I quickly discovered the real strength of the speech apraxia community. People stepped forward and volunteered their time and skills, offering support in so many different ways. From redesigning our WhatsApp group logos, to collating events into an easy, tagged format, the help has been constant and generous. Others have spoken at events, edited podcasts, shared our work on social media, and supported fellow community members.

It has been incredible to watch the organisation grow in this way. There is a real sense that everyone helps everyone within our community. Alongside this, donations have helped cover essential running costs, including business Zoom, website hosting, promotional materials, and professional fees. Wherever people can, they have found a way to help.

I can honestly say that I am not alone. Together, we are Speech Apraxia UK. Thank you so much to everyone.

Auditory therapy helps phonology. Apraxia needs motor learning. Same tools so same outcomes.

Auditory approaches assume that if a child hears sounds clearly, production will improve. This assumption holds for phonological disorders, where sound systems are disorganised and perception plays a key role. In speech ...
