World Immunisation Week

Vaccines have saved millions of lives. Protecting people, families and communities for generations.

From childhood immunisations to vaccines later in life, they help guard against serious illnesses like measles, whooping cough and more.

For every generation, vaccines work.

In Orkney, all immunisations are provided by NHS Orkney at the Vaccination Centre at The Balfour. This includes flu, COVID, shingles, pneumococcal and childhood vaccines.

📞 To book or make an enquiry, please call 0300 303 5313

If you’re unsure whether you or your child are up to date, support is there to help.

Support beyond treatment – here in Orkney

A diagnosis can affect so much more than your physical health — and you don’t have to navigate it alone.

The Improving Cancer Journey (ICJ) team at NHS Orkney offers non-clinical support for people affected by cancer. And now also for those living with cardiac conditions.

They can help with things like:
🤝 Emotional support
💬 Financial or practical advice
🧭 Signposting to local services

It’s about supporting you as a whole person, not just your condition.

If you or someone you care for could benefit, you can find out more here: https://www.ohb.scot.nhs.uk/your-health/improving-the-cancer-journey-icj/

A warm Heilendi welcome to Dr Ben Jesse

We’re pleased to introduce Dr Ben Jesse, our new GPST3, who will be with us for the next 12 months as he completes his final year of GP training.

Dr Jesse is a fully qualified doctor and brings a range of experience from hospital specialties, most recently at The Balfour.

You may be offered an appointment with Dr Jesse during this time, working under the supervision of one of our GPs.

Supporting GP trainees and medical students is an important part of what we do, and we’re very grateful for your ongoing support.

If you see Dr Jesse around, please do say hello and give him a warm Heilendi welcome 😊

🚶‍♀️ National Walking Day

As spring starts to show itself, it’s a lovely time to get outdoors and enjoy some fresh air.

Walking (or wheeling) is one of the simplest ways to support your health, helping both body and mind.

🌿 It doesn’t have to be a big walk
☕ It could be a short stroll, a catch-up with a friend, or a bit of time to yourself
🛍 Even a trip to the shops counts

However it looks for you, it all adds up.

A little movement each day can make a big difference.

Looking for a gentle way to get started?
Local Health Walks are short, friendly, and led by trained walk leaders — open to everyone and free to join.

March is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

Prostate cancer often has no symptoms early on, so awareness is key.

Book and appointment to get checked if you notice:
🌙 Needing to p*e more often (especially at night)
🚽 Difficulty p*eing or weak flow
⚠️ Feeling like your bladder isn’t fully empty

These symptoms aren’t always serious, but it’s important to speak to your GP.
You can also ask about a PSA blood test, especially if you’re over 50 or have a family history.

For local support, follow Orkney Prostate Awareness

Don’t forget — the clocks go forward on Sunday as British Summer Time begins.
Lighter evenings are on the way!

A few gentle reminders:
💊 Take medication at the usual new time
💤 Try heading to bed slightly earlier the night before
📅 Check any appointment times

A small shift can make you feel a bit off for a few days — especially little ones. Be patient with yourself and your sleep routine.

Here’s to brighter days ahead 🌿
