An Iron deficiency can have such a negative impact on your hair causing increased shedding and/or producing weak brittle hair 🩸
"Why won't my Doctor take my iron deficiency seriously?"
We see comments like this from iron deficient patients a concerning amount of times. This is largely due to a lack of awareness of iron deficiency and a strong prevalence of misconceptions about the condition. Here's some facts about iron deficiency that we want to raise awareness of:
- The symptoms of iron deficiency occur with or without anaemia. Iron deficiency without anaemia should be treated.
- Iron deficiency occurs before/without anaemia in 25% of women
- Heavy Menstrual Bleeding occurs in 1 in 4 women, with over half of these women becoming iron deficient as a result
-. Ferritin < 15 is empty while ferritin < 30 is iron deficient, both scenarios need treated.
- Incorporating more iron into your diet alone is not a sufficient treatment for iron deficiency, you do need help from supplements.
-. Oral iron is best taken in a 60mg dose of elemental iron taken on alternate days. Higher prescriptions are more likely to lead to gastrointestinal side effects.
- Oral iron treatment works for some patients, however, a large proportion cannot tolerate it due to gastrointestinal side effects. Intravenous iron should be considered as an alternative treatment in this scenario.
- An iron infusion is a safe and effective treatment which can be used to treat iron deficiency with or without anaemia. Intravenous iron is not exclusively for extremely iron deficient patients, prevention of iron deficiency progression is important too.
