Real Conversations is a great tagline for a great local networking group, Ladies Who Latte (admittedly a less than great name!) Today was a joy. Meeting motivated positive women, keen to connect through conversation, offering advice and sharing support. Great ideas shared and practical problems solved.

I've nearly posted recently about how frustrated I've been feeling with the damage and difficulty caused by lack of real conversation.

It's disconnecting, distressing and makes life harder in so many ways. Ironical, in todays excess of communication, that the most fundamental one is being overlooked and relegated.

Today was refreshing and a tonic - thoughtful conversation and meaningful connection. And a wonderful warm welcome! Thank you.....

Did you know that listening to birdsong is a powerful system reset and health boost?

Research by King's College London, showed just 6 to 15 minutes lowers heart rate and cortisol levels and benefits can last for up to 8 hours.

Our brains associate birdsong with safety, due to a lack of predators and cue our nervous systems to relax. This is because birds stop singing and are quiet when a threat is near.

So not only is it a wonderful experience to hear birds singing and a joyful reminder spring is its way, there's also a positive benefit for us.

💚 Use this simple, easy technique to support your health and calm body and mind whenever you're outside.

Betwixt Winter and Spring,
Here we are,
Gently and steadily,
Moving forwards,
Even on the heavy, still, silent days,
When change is imperceptible.

What's my mindful tonic to counter a wintery, dark, wet, grey, 'miserable' kind of morning where motivation is lacking and I'm definitely feeling unsettled and a bit 'grumbly'?

Having a "play" with some random, slightly out of date beetroot and coconut cream. I'll b**g it in the soup maker and see what happens!

The magic of Mindfulness really helps here;

✅️ Bringing curiousity and letting go of expectations, control, perfectionism and judgement. Choosing a gentler approach ie "let's see what happens", rather than an outcome focused attitude of "soup making".

✅️ Engaging in the sensory experience. Noticing and enjoying the earthy beety smell, papery allium skins, fragrant coconut cream, eye watering onion, appetising garlic aroma.
Touching, smelling, hearing, seeing and beginning to anticipate the taste.

✅️ By noticing the different senses and engaging fully with the body's experience I become grounded in the present moment. I am more present.
Focusing on sensory elements - what is being physically experienced, dials down mental chatter. That is calming.

✅️ Focusing quietly on the physical task in hand (literally) by handling food, chopping, measuring, gives my scattered mind something practical to settle on. That is soothing.

10 minutes later, I'm more grounded, present, focused and happier - not because I've made soup (it's yet to be taste tasted and may be going straight in the bin! 😂) but because I recognised I was unsettled, physically and mentally.
And chose to kindly, compassionately alter that uncomfortable unhelpful 'state' through practical mindful techniques...

Awareness
Self compassion
Focusing on senses and movement
Soften
Soothe
Settle

Oh and there's the possibility of delicious pink soup for lunch!

Today, I give myself permission to rest.
Previously made plans got cancelled due to Storm Chandra. Maybe that's a gift rather than a disappointment......

Life has been very full in recent weeks, despite my good intentions to have a gentle January, which I know was what I needed.
Life shows no sign of letting up either.
There's a constant tooing and froing between what I think I need to do, what others need from me and what life keeps throwing my way.....

I know I'm not the only one. There's a lot going on in peoples lives and in the world. I see you 🙏

Sometimes the best way to navigate all that heaviness, activity and noise is to simply stop.
Cease and desist.
Let go of fixing, doing, ticking tasks off lists, squeezing jobs in, planning and completing.

💚 Today, I chose to tune into how I felt. How I really felt, not what I would like to feel or thought I should feel. I acknowledged the weariness, brain fog, big emotions.

💚 Today, I chose kindness and self compassion. Firstly by allowing myself to feel like this - no judgement. It is what it is. And that's ok.

💚 I accepted it.
And I am giving my body what it needs.
Softening, slowing down and sitting.
Warmth and stillness help soothe our bodies at times like this.
And journalling helps quiten internal noise

💚 Today the house is empty. I can ignore clocks and routine and allow myself to rest, eat, sleep, work, potter, drink tea, eat cake, tidy, journal, meditate as/when I feel, or not.

💙 Today I give myself permission to rest 💙

It's Winter. If you're weary or your plate is overfull right now its ok to simply stop for a while. Step back. Withdraw. Retreat.

Everyone needs a break

And they are here! ...... popping up first where the winter suns rays have been warming the cold earth.

Such a joy to see. We're moving through Winter, even if Spring seems far away. There's still much to enjoy or appreciate, in this tricky part of the season, if we choose to 🌱

Snowdrops symbolise new beginnings, hope, rebirth and the capacity to triumph over challenges. For many, their appearance is a clear reassurance and reminder that Spring is coming. Seeing a carpet of their white joyful dancing heads always lifts my spirits

A symbol of resilience—they are the first new flowers of the year to push through the cold, wet, often frozen earth. They represent hope and the promise that winter doesn't last forever.
