Mat Pilates has recently had a huge resurgence, being one of the biggest fitness “trends” of 2025! But with that comes a lot of misunderstanding, so today we’re here to clear a few of those up!
1. Pilates is supposed to be fast!
Pilates is intentionally slow because slow movement increases time under tension: the amount of time your muscles stay engaged. More time under tension means deeper muscle activation, better control, and a stronger core. Going fast often uses momentum, which skips the muscles Pilates is designed to target.
2. You have to have a strong core!
Pilates creates strength, especially in muscles people don’t usually train, like the deep core, pelvic floor, and stabilizers around the hips and shoulders.
You don’t need a strong core to begin; you build it through controlled movements, progressive loading, and mindful activation. Pilates is designed to meet you where you are and level you up safely.
3. Pilates is just for women!
Pilates was originally created by Joseph Pilates, a man,for men, including soldiers and athletes.
Pilates improves power, mobility, and functional strength that benefits all bodies. Many male athletes (NBA, FOOTBALLERS, NFL) use Pilates to boost performance, prevent injury, and improve core stability. It’s not gendered, it’s human movement.
4. Pilates will make my bad bad worse!
Although we always recommend seeking the advice of a medical professional before starting a new form of exercise for the first time if you have something like a bad back, pilates could actually help as it improves posture, deepening the deep core muscles that support the spine!
5. Pilates is the same as Yoga!
Although some of the movements look similar and they both focus on that mind-body connection, pilates is focused on the physical, building strength, stability and mobility. Yoga on the other hand sees the physical as only a very small part of the practice, going beyond this into the spiritual.
You can practice Mat Pilates with Tali (Thursday 5:45pm) and Charlotte (Tuesday 6:30am)! A little birdie also tells us that there may be more mat Pilates coming soon so keep your eyes peeled!
