As you may have noticed I haven't been able to update the advent this past week. For this I'm truly sorry, its certainly been quite the week here.

After a ride in an ambulance and some emergency surgery, I have been put on bed rest.

I can't thank the wonderful NHS staff at Wishaw General enough for their care and compassion.

For now Modero will be back in the new year. Have a wonderful festive period wherever you are, full of love and laughter.

ADVENT DAY 15 - Mind Storage Boxes
How many things are currently on your to do list? Does looking at your to do list help calm you down and make you feel organised and on top of things, or overwhelmed and unsure how you are going to achieve everything there?
How often do we find the need to try and organise ourselves, to aim towards that picture perfect moment when everything is ticked off, only to find another 10 items added to the list.
Life can be busy and cluttered, and throw more than one curve ball our way at a time. The key here is to be able to de-clutter the mind to enhance our ability to focus on one task at a time.

Take a deep breath and close your eyes, imaging a set of 12 storage boxes or drawers in your mind. Each storage box is capable of containing one thought or thing to focus on.
Organise your thoughts into the storage boxes, anything that is currently on your mind, worries, things to do, funny bits, things you are excited about, all need a storage space home. Try to leave a couple of storage boxes free for any new items which may arise during the day.
If you are running out of storage boxes, stop and take a closer look at your items, what can you let go of?
As you finish organising, stand back and admire your hard work, with your thoughts neatly organised and any unnecessary clutter discarded, and let the feeling of contented calm wash over you.

ADVENT DAY 14 - I Think, I Feel
Today take ownership of your feelings, good and bad.
Often we find ourselves blaming others simply through our language, 'you hurt my feelings', laying the blame on the other person and often causing hurt on both sides. Today think of any 'you' statements you make and change them to 'I', 'I felt hurt when you didn't speak to me'.
This change in language puts you firmly in control of your emotions and can resolve conflict quickly by making everyone involved feel heard, valued and empowered.

NLP stands for Neuro Linguistic Programming, a growing psychological technique employed around the world to achieve positive changes in life, be that overcoming fears and anxieties, or challenging yourself to do something you didn't think you could and, believing in your own success. So to break that down a little bit it In short it is a way of influencing our brains behaviour (Neuro) through the use of language (Linguistic) and other types of communication to allow us to choose the way which our brain responds to stimuli (Programming).
Now hard as we may try it is difficult to change the world around us, but actually our problems aren't found in the physical world, but rather in our subjective experience of it.
As coach Michael Neill describes it 'We're not scared of what we think we think we're afraid of, we're afraid of what we think' Michael Neill

ADVENT DAY 13 - Sign It!
We all have habits, good and bad ones, and as humans we tend to stick to what we know, repeating the same process over and over again, like a well worn path in our brains. The more times we walk the same path, the easier it becomes to traverse as the grass is trampled and worn and a nice smooth path created. However we can only grow and learn by taking the path uncharted, exploring and experiencing new things. Often the thought of trying something different and new, can be far worse than the experience itself... ever heard that old saying "was it as bad as you thought?".

Sign your name ten times, make sure it is autograph worthy and ready.
Now sign your name ten times with your non dominant hand, what do you notice from your first attempt to the tenth?
As we practice and become more comfortable, we also become more confident, now get signing your autograph like a rockstar with the wrong hand!

ADVENT DAY 11 - THE WORRY STONE MONSTER

Get your worries out your head quickly and effectively today!

Grab a stone, or a piece of paper and have it to hand with some coloured pencils.
With your eyes closed, take a moment to gather all your worries together in your mind, and imagine squeezing them together tightly to form a ball. This time as you squeeze again, your worry ball will begin to morph into a little monster. Now that worry monster hasn't been helping you out very much so its time to let him go.

Place your finger on the paper or stone, and gently give your little worry monster a considerate shove out of your head, down your arm and out onto the paper or stone (paper and stone is like a prison for monsters so they aren't getting out anytime). Remove your finger from the paper and just take a moment to enjoy the peace and quiet in your head.

Use your pencils to decorate the stone or paper with a picture of your monster, can't have those stones getting mixed up in the garden.

Some people like to put their worries away in a safe place where they cannot bother them, others like to destroy the little monsters forever!

ADVENT DAY 10 - BUBBLE BALLOON

Play keepie uppie with a balloon today, but you can only gently touch the balloon as if it were a bubble, gently helping it stay up in the air. You can also do this activity, using slow and steady deep breaths to gently blow on the balloon to keep it afloat.

Mindfulness, or the ability to become more connected our inner workings of mental, emotional and physical processes, can deepen our connections and experiences.
While meditation may not be for everyone, and the simple thought of sitting with your legs crossed, chanting "om" makes you blush like a beetroot and run for the hills, there are plenty of other activities which can make us feel more connected and sharpen our focus.
Mindfulness is the process of letting go of judgement, and approaching experiences with kindness, curiosity and a settled energy.

ADVENT DAY 9 - THE FEELING OF FEELINGS
Submodalities, now there is the perfect example of how NLP makes a big fancy word for something simple. Submodalities are the how we do something, the state we build tied to experiences and emotions. To do this we use our senses, to make sense of things. We create our internal memories primarily through visual (pictures), auditory (sounds) and kinesthetics (feelings). Submodalitites are like the building blocks to put together the way we experience our lives.
Kinesthetics are wonderful to discuss with young people as they have far less inhibitions when describing funny feelings in their tummy, and curiosity about how others sense the world.

Today draw your awareness to the feelings in your body, where are they? what do they feel like? Are they moving? and what emotion are they linked too?

*ADVENT DAY 8 - PERCEPTION IS EVERYTHING

A bank gets robbed by a masked man, and the police turn up to investigate the crime. The bank teller, speaks of a huge man, with broad muscled shoulders. The young child tells of the banana shaped gun that was waved around. The old lady cannot remember what the person looked like at all but is concerned about when she will receive her pension if the bank is closed. The cyclist who saw the man fleeing the scene described a lean built robber but a slow runner as he was quite short.
Every person was present at the same robbery, but they all filter the event through their own current state. So their map, will never show the whole territory.
This explains why we as a teacher I never get the same story from 5 pupils after an argument in the playground!

Take a look at the images in the post, what do you see? If you look longer do you notice anything else? Does everyone in the room see the same thing as you?

*ADVENT DAY 7 - BUILD-A-BRAIN

I love love love getting creative in the run up to christmas, in fact it helps me feel calm, getting lost in a project such as creating a christmas wreath. Its almost like an escape from the pressure of society to have the perfect decorations.

Have you ever looked at a duck slowly drifting across a pond and thought, that's the life, peace and quiet, just drifting along without a care. You can spend your day waiting on some bread to be thrown, quacking merrily at the other ducks and watching the fish. The duck seems as though he has it all pretty much together right?
Well what about under the surface? That duck is paddling like mad trying to keep up with life, avoid the weeds, kick away the fishes, and more often than not blaming others around him for bringing stale bread, wishing he was just a year younger and able to swim faster.
Every person ten million other thoughts going on in their brain every day, all day and even when you are talking to them. Some have become like the duck and are managing to look calm on the exterior, some have built an effective network of support strategies and are able to paddle a little less, others have sprung a leak and are sinking fast.

Today get creative! Spend a little time and make a model or a drawing of a brain. Each piece of your model should represent something which helps calm you in times of stress or makes you happy. If you are drawing your brain, write notes all around of songs to listen to to help you feel more confident or people to reach out to when you need a little boost. You will have more strategies to write or represent than you will have realised, you might even want to add some of the activities from day 1-6 here!

Modero

At Modero we are passionate about helping people the world over achieve freedom from stress and anxiety and gain more control in their lives through the use of Neuro Linguistic Programming.

For the past two years we have been researching the impact NLP has on reducing the stress experienced by school pupils as they make the transition from primary to secondary school with great success. This has built to the programme which we are now delivering online to support pupils through the current health crisis and beyond.

The team consists of Susan Andrews and Ali Campbell, bringing together the experience and expertise of both education and NLP of the highest standard. In a meeting of minds at one of Ali's courses and a shared drive to ensure that the powerful tools of NLP are in the hands of children so that they can grow to resilient, adaptable and confident adults, Modero was born.

Susan is a Primary School teacher in Scotland, working every day to support pupils learning in a caring and compassionate manner. Using innovate approaches to embed the philosophy and strategies from her training in NLP and Life Coaching to ensure that every pupil has the chance to thrive and achieve the life they want. She is uniquely placed to support pupils in overcoming fears and anxieties, from exam stress to school transitions, and getting the most out of their education.
