🧡 LET’S TALK, LANCASTER
Episode 5, Part 2 – Men’s Mental Health
by Dr Sarah Baxter
This conversation highlights a powerful truth: su***de is preventable, but depression can make people feel invisible, worthless, and alone.
🧠 The core truth: depression distorts reality
Depression convinces people they’re unloved or don’t matter—is one of the most dangerous aspects of it.
“You don’t realise you’re loved until it’s too late”.
People aren’t lacking love—they’ve lost the ability to feel or believe it.
👀 The “invisible” warning signs
Signs that someone is struggling with their mood can often be subtle or normalised:
Changes in sleep or appetite
Irritability or anger (especially in men)
Withdrawal or loss of interest
Increased drinking or numbing behaviours
These don’t always look like “sadness,” which is why they get missed.
👨🦱 Men’s mental health specifically
Men can express distress differently.
Sadly, social expectations still push many men toward silence, stoicism, or masking pain with humour, anger, or avoidance. That’s why conversations like this are so important—they help redefine what strength looks like.
🗣️ Language matters more than we think
Calling out phrases like “committed su***de” is subtle but powerful. Shifting language helps reduce stigma and changes how we think about mental health—from judgment to understanding.
🤝 Supporting someone: can be simple but not easy:
Ask directly
Listen without trying to fix
Stay present
Remind people they are loved and cared for. They matter and they are not a burden.
It’s okay not to be okay. You don’t have to face it alone. Help is always available.
