A proud moment for Jack in Carlisle

Jack continues to show incredible dedication during his weekly work placement at The Gym Group Carlisle. This week, one of the gym members nominated him for an award, recognising his polite, helpful, and friendly attitude.

He was absolutely over the moon with the acknowledgement - so much so that he snapped a photo straight away to share the moment with his family.

Well done, Jack! Your hard work and positivity shine through every week. And a big thank you to The Gym Group Carlisle for supporting him so brilliantly.

❤️🎸 Beaumont College South Lakes - Valentine’s Performance ❤️🎤

Students from Beaumont College South Lakes performed in a fantastic musical extravaganza at the Round House Hub and Café on Walney Island.

The week-long programme of concerts is an exciting opportunity for local organisations to perform in front of a community audience during the build-up to Valentine’s Day. This is a powerful way for students to develop their musical skills, confidence and sense of pride.

Students already built up their appetite for stardom at the same venue last Christmas and they are looking forward to further showcase events in future.

Students gave their positive feedback after the event:

👋🏻 Robbie: “It was a really welcoming atmosphere.”
🎤 Jessica: “It was good because I never usually get to sing a solo.”
🎸 Ben: “I felt proud to play my bass.”
🤩 Keira F: “I felt pretty good with my vocals.”
🎵 Kailem: “It encouraged me to be an independent musician.”
😁 Jodie: “I felt enthusiastic to sing to an audience.”

We’re diving in to do our bit — and we’d love your support!

Our Digital Health is a research project that looks at how people with learning disabilities use technology for health and wellbeing. Funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research, the project explores the different ways people experience digital health—seeing what works well for them and what could be improved. By working closely with people with learning disabilities, the project aims to make digital health more inclusive and helpful for everyone.

From the team:

We are looking for carers of people with learning disabilities to take part in a questionnaire about using technology to support health. We will want you to do the questionnaire twice.

For more information and to take part please email us at OurDigitalHealth@ljmu.ac.uk

📱 Safer Internet Day at Our Lancaster Campus

Yesterday, our Lancaster students took part in activities for Safer Internet Day during their Skills for Life session. This year’s theme — “Smart tech, safe choices: exploring the safe and responsible use of AI” — gave everyone a chance to think about how AI shows up in everyday life and how to use it safely and confidently.

Students explored real‑world examples of AI, discussed the benefits and challenges of smart technology, and reflected on how to make informed choices online. It was a great opportunity to build awareness and practical skills that support safe digital habits.

Well done to everyone who got involved and contributed to thoughtful discussions.

📣 Parliament Outreach Visit at the Lancaster Student Union

On Friday 6th February, we were delighted to welcome Rachael Dodgson from the UK Parliament Outreach team to the Student Union. She gave an insightful talk about how Parliament works and what really happens behind the scenes.

Rachael explained the differences between the House of Commons and the House of Lords, showed everyone how to find out who their MP is, and walked us through how bills are created and become laws.

The group found the session incredibly informative, and everyone really enjoyed hearing what she had to share.
A big thank you to Rachael for such an engaging and educational visit!

South Lakes Horticulture Survey

Horticulture students from our Beaumont College South Lakes campus visited ‘Roudsea Wood and Mosses’ National Nature Reserve near Haverthwaite, Cumbria. Students Izzy, Shyla, Saskia, Jack and Arran were part of the team. They explored the site to identify plant life in the natural environment.

The group found a variety of interesting species, including Silver Birch, Rhododendron, Hazel Catkins, Honeysuckle and various fungi. They also discovered ways in which the water is irrigated to control its flow around the area.

Their findings will be submitted to the Woodland Trust as part of their Nature’s Calendar public survey. This information contributes to a long biological record that dates back as far as the year 1736.

Students also discussed accessibility to ensure everybody was able to safely explore the natural landscape. Shyla also tried out her new camping chair during break time.

We look forward to visiting the site again in a few months to record how the landscape has changed.

🌍📚 Exploring Climate Change Through Nature 📚🌍

Our Forest School sessions have taken on a thoughtful new theme recently, as our Lancaster students have been engaging with the National Literacy Trust’s “We Wonder: Protect Our Nature” challenge. Although the challenge is aimed at younger readers, the ideas behind it resonate with all ages — especially those who spend time learning outdoors.

We’ve been exploring climate change, the natural world, and our role in protecting it through three inspiring books now available in our sessions: How to Teach Grown-Ups About Climate Change, Wild Planet, and A Wild Child’s Guide to Nature at Night. Each one has sparked meaningful conversations, creative thinking, and a deeper appreciation for the environment around us.

Forest School has been the perfect setting for this work. From discussing the impact of climate change on local wildlife to reflecting on how small actions can make a difference, our learners have embraced the theme with curiosity and enthusiasm.

We’re looking forward to sharing some of the brilliant work produced over the coming weeks as we continue to explore how we can all play a part in protecting our planet.

🌿 A little sunshine goes a long way! 🌿

After a few nicer days of weather, our Lancaster Forest School students have been busy creating their very own bird boxes.

Each one has been crafted with care, creativity, and a real sense of pride. We can’t wait to see them hanging in our sensory garden, offering a cosy home for local wildlife.

Here’s to more sunshine, more outdoor learning, and more creative making!

🛍️ Work Placement Spotlight – Carlisle Campus 🛍️

During his work placement session, Brandon has been working incredibly hard running a tuck shop in college for staff and students to visit.

Over the past few months, Brandon has developed his tuck shop using visual symbol cards to show staff which items he would like to stock. With support, he follows numbers and counts items, unpacks the tuck shop each week, and matches real-life picture price cards to each item. He has now built the confidence and skills to do this with minimal staff input. At the end of each session, Brandon carefully packs everything away ready for next time.

Brandon also serves customers, taking payments, handing over change, and issuing receipts. Each week, his plan is reviewed and adapted to reflect the fantastic progress he continues to make.

He is always excited and eager for this session and loves seeing his friends and staff come to the shop.

This activity supports students to develop important life skills, including queuing and turn-taking, coin recognition, and making independent choices about what they would like to buy.
