Coniston To Barrow Training Profile - Rosie

⌚🚶‍♀️Rosie Talbot (Deputy Lead Tutor at Beaumont College South Lakes) just completed 8 miles in training! 💪 Working in SEN education, she witnesses the impact of epilepsy every day. She is in training for the Coniston to Barrow walk to raise awareness, challenge stigma, and keep moving forward. Epilepsy doesn’t stop—and neither is she. 🟣

💷 £50 could help forward our world-leading research projects, leading to more accurate, personalised treatment.

💷£20 could help to ensure that someone who desperately needs to talk about their epilepsy can call our helpline.

💷£60 could prepare tissue samples for microscopic analysis, aimed at reducing Sudden Unexplained Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP)

💷£75 could pay for lab equipment such as PCR tubes which are essential for DNA extraction and analysis from our donated blood samples. This DNA can be stored and analysed in multiple research studies.

💷 £100 could pay for advanced analysis of five people’s genomic data, helping us uncover genetic risk factors for different types of epilepsy to better tailor treatments with the aim of controlling seizures and transforming lives.

🌟 A Day of Firsts for Our Lancaster Students! 🌟

What an exciting day for students in their fitness class!

🚴‍♀️ Sarah took a huge step and tried out two wheels for the very first time at Salt Ayre. Her determination was incredible, and we couldn’t be prouder of her progress.

⛳ Adam also hit a milestone, giving putting a go at Heysham Golf Club. He showed great focus and had a fantastic time learning something new.

These moments are exactly what our sessions are all about: confidence, growth, and celebrating every achievement, big or small. Well done, both of you - we can’t wait to see what you try next!

🌿 Skippool Students Earn Their RSPB Wild Challenge Bronze Award!
Our amazing Skippool students have been working hard each week towards their RSPB Wild Challenge Bronze Award — and we’re thrilled to share that they’ve achieved it!

They’ve been choosing their own activities from the Wild Challenge website and submitting evidence for six completed challenges. Their enthusiasm, teamwork, and curiosity about the natural world have been brilliant to see.

Here are just a few of the things they’ve been up to:

✨ Becoming weather wizards by making wind socks and rain catchers
✨ Writing their own nature‑inspired poem
✨ Creating a bird bath
✨ Refurbishing the bug hotel
✨ Planting seeds to encourage new growth
✨ Making bird feeders to support local wildlife
…and so much more.

We’re incredibly proud of their dedication and creativity. Well done, Skippool - what a fantastic achievement!

Our Gardening Group have turned leftover willow from our new dome project into something brilliant: a traditional willow hurdle.

Hurdles are a natural, old-style fencing method that’s still really effective today - helping us decorate and clearly mark the accessible garden area while keeping the space welcoming and inclusive.

This project also reflects our commitment to greener choices:

Reusing materials to reduce waste
Using natural, biodegradable structures instead of plastic alternatives
Creating extra habitats for wildlife, supporting biodiversity in the garden

A big well done to Lenore and Mia, who both took an active role in building the hurdle, showing fantastic teamwork, creativity and pride in their environment.

🌟 A Fantastic Visit to Animal Care Lancaster! 🌟

Our Transition Action Planning group had a brilliant educational trip to Animal Care in Lancaster. Students were given a full tour of the site, spending time with the cats and rabbits and learning about how the centre supports their wellbeing.

They then took part in an interactive session in the education room, exploring the 5 Welfare Needs and getting hands-on with some mystery objects - including a stethoscope, which definitely sparked some curiosity and conversation.

A huge thank you to Steph and all the staff for making the visit so welcoming, informative, and memorable. Our students came away inspired and full of new knowledge.

🌲 Carlisle Campus Adventure Update! 🌄

Last week our Gold DofE group headed out to the beautiful Derwentwater and Friar’s Crag for a day packed with navigation, teamwork and discovery. William, Callum and the rest of the group put their map‑reading skills into action as they followed their planned route, taking time along the way to appreciate the stunning views and gather observations for their conservation accreditation.

The team worked brilliantly on taking the lead, managing safety through forest paths and road sections, and supporting one another throughout the walk. Their wildlife spotting was on point too — they identified deer prints and even discovered some frogspawn, which William was quick to recognise. A fantastic moment for the whole group.

A huge well done to everyone involved. Another great step forward on their Gold DofE journey.

🌼 Work Skills in the Spring Sunshine! 🌼

Our Blackpool students made the most of their work skills session with a relaxed shopping trip — and the spring sunshine made it even better. We took our time strolling to the shops, enjoying the fresh air, chatting along the way, and even stopping to smell the roses.

What looked like a simple outing was actually packed with meaningful learning moments:

🛒 Making independent choices in the shops
🧭 Navigating the store and the local community
💷 Handling money with growing confidence
💬 Chatting with staff and practising social skills

So many everyday skills being strengthened naturally, without it ever feeling like ‘work’. The smiles were constant, the laughs were loud, and the confidence was shining just as brightly as the sun.

🌄 Lancaster Outdoor Adventure – Rydal Caves Trip!

Our students are out exploring the incredible Rydal Caves this week, and what a perfect spot to put their adventure skills into action. From the scenic walk up through the fells to the moment they step inside the vast, echoing cave, it’s an experience that always inspires a sense of adventure.

They’ll be learning navigation, teamwork, and outdoor awareness while soaking up one of the Lake District’s most iconic landscapes. Trips like this are exactly why we love what we do - real-world adventure, unforgettable views, and memories that stick.

🌟 Transition Action Planning Social at The Clubhouse! 🌟

Our Lancaster students had a fantastic time in Morecambe today, taking part in our Transition Action Planning session at The Clubhouse. It was a great mix of activities, conversations, and confidence‑building — plus the chance to make new friends, including a few four‑legged ones who definitely stole the show.

Brilliant energy, lots of laughs, and plenty of planning for the exciting steps ahead. Can’t wait for the next session!

Students have been building their independence skills out in the community.

They’ve been using public transport as part of their weekly routine-recognising the usual bus driver, greeting familiar passengers, handing over their fare/bus pass, waiting for their ticket, and collecting it independently.

At the supermarket, everyone worked together to shop for items for our sensory cooking session.

One student pushed the trolley and practised scanning items at the checkout with support.

Others focused on finding the correct items from the shopping list.
Another student used the self-checkout to scan items independently - great confidence and focus!

A brilliant team effort, with everyone playing their part and growing in communication, confidence, and independence.
