Defying Dementia

Defying Dementia Defying Dementia - Raising funds and awareness of the research taking place at Lancaster University into Alzheimer's and neurodegenerative brain disease.

Several years ago we developed a drug that blocks the formation of 'senile plaques' found in the brains of victims of Alzheimer's disease/dementia. This drug blocks the assembly of these plaques, along with their toxic effect, on brain cells. It is highly stable in the body and is tagged so it can cross the blood-brain barrier. The drug reduces the load of plaques present in cell models of the disease, along with reducing inflammation and oxidative damage. Lancaster University was granted a patent for this technology, however the underlying lab work has reached the end of funding by Research Councils. Unfortunately, the drug does not yet have the high technology readiness level and low perceived risk demanded by the pharmaceutical industry. Therefore, we are launching a crowd-funding campaign to raise money which will re-invigorate the stalled technology and ultimately get the drug into human clinical trials! This page has been created to promote our campaign and raise awareness of the research taking place at Lancaster University, so please 'like' us to be kept updated with our progress!

This week, we were absolutely delighted to celebrate our Defying Dementia charity shop raising over an incredible £100,000 for Dementia research!! Every penny raised by the charity shop has gone straight to the Defying Dementia team’s research into creating a drug effective against Alzheimer’s disease.

We would like to thank Linda and Neil Warrington for bringing to life the charity shop and making it the huge success that it is today, as well as all of the volunteers who give up their time in the shop, our supporters who donate their items and the community who continue to shop in the charity shop. Your support means that our Defying Dementia can continue their vital research into Alzheimer’s disease and the cause and effects of Dementia, so THANK YOU 💛🖤
