Ever feel pulled in two different directions?

A part of you wants to rest…
while another pushes you to keep going

A part of you wants connection…
while another holds back

This isn’t you being difficult or confused.
It’s your system trying to balance different needs.

In Internal Family Systems (IFS), we understand these as parts, our protectors, each one trying to help in its own way, even when it doesn’t feel like it.

When you begin to understand those parts, something shifts:
less self-judgement
more clarity
more steadiness within yourself

You don’t have to figure it out alone.
Therapy can help you make sense of what’s happening inside, with care and compassion.

If you’re ready, we’re here to support you.

“A part of you isn’t the problem”

Sometimes there’s a part of you that:

• overthinks everything
• shuts things down
• pushes people away
• keeps you busy so you don’t have to feel

It can be frustrating.
It can feel like it’s getting in the way.

But in Internal Family Systems, we understand something different:

That part of you is not the problem.

It’s trying to help.

Even if it doesn’t feel that way.

Many of these parts formed at a time when you needed protection.

They learned how to:

• keep you safe
• avoid hurt
• manage overwhelming feelings

And they’ve kept doing that job,
even when your life has changed.

So instead of asking:

“Why am I like this?”

We begin to ask:

“What is this part trying to do for me?”

When we start to relate to our parts with curiosity instead of criticism,
something shifts.

There’s more space.
More understanding.
More choice.

🌿 At Breakthrough Therapy NI, we work with parts in a trauma-informed way, helping you understand what’s happening beneath the surface, not just manage what you see.

Boundaries are often misunderstood.

They’re not about being difficult, distant or shutting people out.

They’re about recognising your limits, protecting your capacity and responding in a way that is sustainable for you.

For many people, boundaries don’t come easily.

They can bring up guilt, discomfort or a fear of letting others down.

Often, that’s because of what we’ve learned about keeping the peace, meeting expectations or putting ourselves last.

In therapy, we don’t just talk about boundaries.

We explore what makes them difficult, and how to build them in a way that feels safe, clear and respectful.

When Your Capacity Drops (And Why It Matters More Than You Think)

Most people don’t realise how much their capacity changes.

We often expect ourselves to:
keep going
handle the same workload
respond the same way every day

But our capacity is not fixed.

It shifts depending on what your nervous system is holding and responding to.

On the surface it can look like:
losing patience
feeling overwhelmed
struggling to focus
shutting down or pushing harder

But underneath, your system may be working with:
less energy
more stress
sensory or emotional overload
and accumulated demands over time

From a nervous system and parts-based perspective, these aren’t random reactions.

They are adaptive responses.

Your system is constantly scanning for safety and adjusting based on what feels manageable in that moment.

For many people, especially those who:
push through
take on a lot
or mask how they feel

it becomes easy to override those signals and keep going anyway.

But over time, that comes at a cost.

Understanding capacity allows a different kind of response.

Not:
“What’s wrong with me?”

But:
“What is my system able for today?”

And sometimes the answer is not to push harder.

It’s to:
reduce pressure
increase support
slow the pace
and allow more self compassion and permission to pause

This isn’t about doing less because you “can’t cope”

It’s about working with your system rather than against it.

That’s where more sustainable change happens.

Sometimes what we’re experiencing doesn’t fully make sense until we understand what’s happening underneath.

What looks like:
• pushing through
• feeling overwhelmed
• withdrawing
• irritability
• disconnection

can often be your nervous system working hard to manage stress, overload or past experiences.

From a trauma-informed perspective, these aren’t signs that something is wrong with you.

They are often signs that your system is trying to protect you.

In approaches like Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (body based) and parts-based work (IFS), we understand that the body, brain and different parts of ourselves all play a role in how we respond to the world.

And for many people, especially those who are neurodivergent, this can also be shaped by sensory load, processing demands, environments and the need to adapt or mask.

When we begin to understand this, something shifts.

Instead of asking
“What’s wrong with me?”

we can begin to ask
“What is my system needing right now?”

At Breakthrough Therapy NI, we offer trauma-trained therapy to support people in understanding their patterns, working with their nervous system and moving towards greater regulation, connection and wellbeing.

You don’t have to figure it out on your own.

Sometimes people look like they’re managing well on the outside,
while actually carrying a lot underneath.

Mental health isn’t always obvious.
And just because you’re getting on with things
doesn’t always mean you feel okay.

A simple place to start is to pause for a moment and ask yourself:
“What’s actually going on for me right now?”

There’s nothing you need to fix straight away,
just noticing is a good first step.

✨ We’re Back - Happy New Year from Breakthrough ✨

Today we’re gently returning to work after the Christmas break, and we just want to say thank you to everyone who trusted us, walked with us and supported our work throughout last year.

A new year doesn’t mean pressure to “be a new you.”
It means new space, new chances, and continued care for the parts of you that are already here.

As we step into 2026, our commitment remains the same:
✨ Trauma-informed
✨ Compassion-led
✨ Whole-person, nervous-system-aware support for individuals (children, young people & adults), couples and families.

Whether this year feels hopeful, heavy or a bit of both, you don’t have to carry it alone.

Here’s to moving forward gently, honestly and with care.

🎗🎗World Mental Health Day at St Killian's College🎗🎗

On world mental health day, we had the pleasure of supporting St. Killian’s exciting new initiative for ‘Inclusion Ambassadors’ who will offer peer support within their school community.

John delivered Peer Support Training to a wonderful bunch of inspiring students & staff. We were excited to hear of St. Killian’s approach and honoured to connect with something so powerful for young minds. We were very impressed at the energy, wisdom & compassion from the group - and look forward to hearing about the great work they will do this year!

🌿 The CARA Project is a peer support training for 16–18 year olds to help younger students feel safe, seen and supported.
💬 It teaches nervous system awareness, compassion, active listening and relational safety.
🧠 Young people learn to connect, include and anchor others - not fix, but be there.
✨ Together we build a culture of safety, regulation and belonging.

🌱 Progress Over Perfection

You don’t have to do it all.
You don’t have to get it right.
You just have to keep showing up.

Healing and growth aren’t about perfection -
they’re about small steps, taken with care.

Whether you’re working on yourself, your parenting, your relationships, or your recovery…
Progress is enough. You are enough.
